Pardon my absence gentlemen,
Been a while and some things around house have changed domestically... That's another thread....
Have a fella wanting to sell some SS198 to me but I haven't a clue what the going price or a good price, other than free, would be... Any input here. He's currently offering it for 50 a box...
thanks,

He's talking SS198, not SS197.
I'm not sure what SS198 would go for as that was a restricted LEO round IIRC. _________________ -Dan |

He's referring to the SS198, not the SS197SR.

And I guess the SS197 isn't that cheap anymore either?
I saw it at Wholesale Hunter still at that price but out of stock/backordered... Looks like I need to get my name on the list for 695 a case of 2000... Even if backordered...
Any input on the SS198... Sounding out of the "Right Price" range to me... Is the performance worth the extra cash???

Sorry.

I personally feel that the 197SR will put a hurt on a bad guy as well as the 198. The key is shot placement. What I mean is if I shot a finger, chances are he'll keep coming, but if I get the apricot, he's done.
I can't justify the difference in price, but that's just me.
On the 197SR: Market demand, or lack thereof determines the price to a certain degree. The bottom line is anywhere between $650 and $750. is decent.

You might want to drop by the LE section of the forum and read the locked thread on the subject to avoid any trouble.
You have a PM. |

| As far as I'm aware SS198 is restricted by FN, not by any current ATF regs/laws. It's the exact same as SS192 save for maybe 100-150fps faster and a Lead Free Primer. At Almost $1.00 a round and a LF it's certainly not something to go out plinking with. |

No 5.7 ammo is restricted by ATF, not even SS190.
panzertruppe : Drop by the LE section and you can see where to get it for under $20 a box. Unless my old link has been deleted...I can't remember...... |

I have no problems getting SS 197 from Wholesale Hunter, it's currently $19/box. On any given day one of Cabellas, Cheaper than Dirt, or Wholesale Hunters is down on stock - no problem, just buy from one of the others.
I fail to understand why anyone needs to pursue purchasing SS 198 which is specifically controlled by FN for sale to LEOs and military as it is the original bullet proof vest penetrator that has been the subject of so much negative writing by Congress and the cause of the whole caliber and the two main firearms designed to use it to be strongly considered for banning.
I am a retired LEO, am all for restriciting the sale of SS198 as FN does, and I would not want to participate in any pursuit that might contribute to efforts already underway to ban the PS 90, FiveseveN, or P90 for that matter. I have two of the three and enjoy shooting them.
"SS198LF (lead free)
The SS198 uses the same lead-free projectile and primer as the SS195LF,[26] but propels it at roughly 30 m/s (100 ft/s) higher muzzle velocity. Its sale is restricted by FN to law enforcement and military customers.[6] It has a green painted tip.[6] |

I think it is a joke to restrict ammo except for maybe some DU ammo, because it is radio active. I have a boat load of AP ammo in all sorts of calibers. AP ammo is available all over the place. As long as the person who has the ammo follows the law I have no problem. In Florida you can have and use AP ammo as long as you don't load it into a pistol.
America is turning into a Nanny State; soon they will tell us what we can and can't eat. Just get in line boys and girls and take your National ID card, forced vaccinations, and RFID implants. Don’t ever give an inch because they will take a mile and you will never get it back.
I have AP loaded in my long gun mags; I will not take any chances when it comes to my safety, the safety of my family, and my friends.
I do not support any bans on weapons or ammo period! Ownership of firearms and ammo make us Americans, this is why we are such a great nation, and we are free men! _________________ " Firearms discourage and keep the invader and government plunderer in awe,

The SS198 round is not an AP round and you seem to be mixing your facts and round types up. |

| well not hard armor, but SS195 can penetrate soft armor (level II from one test), so SS198 would. |

And?
So will 22 mag, 7.62x25, 38 super, and a lot of other handgun ammo. It still does not make it AP ammo. |

It is FN's policy and you know the reasons for that policy. Having worn body armor for over thirty years I know that an ice pick will penetrate as well but none of your rants have any effect whatever on the thinking of a whole lot of pretty powerful organizations like this one:
"The Five-seven and 5.7x28mm ammunition were the subject of brief controversy in the United States shortly after they were introduced to civilian shooters.[22] It was claimed by the Brady Campaign that commercially available SS192 penetrated a Level IIA vest in testing.[36] However, armor piercing variants of the 5.7x28mm cartridge are only offered to law enforcement and military customers.[37] Commercially available variants of the 5.7x28mm cartridge are classified by the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) as being not armor piercing and it was claimed that the SS192 and SS196 cartridge variants did not penetrate various types of Kevlar vests in tests conducted by FNH USA.[38]
The Five-seven pistol and 5.7x28mm ammunition were specifically targeted for a U.S. federal ban in 2005, which failed.[39]
In November 2009, the Five-seven and 5.7x28mm ammunition were again the subject of controversy following the pistol's alleged use by U.S. Army psychiatrist, Major Nidal Malik Hasan in the Fort Hood shooting, where 13 were killed and 30 were wounded.[40][41][42] Shortly after the shooting took place, FNH USA responded with a fact sheet dismissing allegations about the nature of the pistol and 5.7x28mm sporting ammunition.[43] Later in the month, a number of gun control organizations such as the Brady Campaign wrote a collaborative letter to U.S. President Barack Obama, calling on him to ban importation of the Five-seven pistol and 5.7x28mm ammunition.[44]" |

| Not sure what you mean by "back-up" as there is nothing to back up, they are simply one of many groups who strive to make illegal the exact weapons we own and love. It is good to be aware of those groups and what they are promoting. That's called "knowledge is power." I hope you didn't get the misperception that anyone here supports those groups! |
