545 mags in FNX45

Any advantage to using the 545 mags in the FNX? Well, having the option of an 18-round extended mag is nice.

I found an online vendor that had one 15-round 545 mag in stock so I bought it, along with a couple more FNX45 mags. Just to try out and see if it would work in the FNX.

Of course, the day after I ordered it, a couple good photos were posted over in the 545 forum showing some comparisons, and it was fairly obvious the 545 mag would not work in the FNX without some modifications being done to either the mag basepad or the grip/magwell of the FNX.

But on receiving the new mag, I was able to confirm the mag body is the same. The follower also appears to be the same. The spring is slightly longer, and has one additional coil.

I pulled apart one of the new FNX mags and swapped base pad between the FNX and 545 mags. Even with the longer spring, the 545 mag (with FNX basepad) held the full 15 rounds and seated in the gun. It looks like it should function just fine.

I have some +2 base pads from Apex on order. So I should be good to go with the 545 mag going forward. I may modify the 545 base pad to fit in the FNX. Looks like I can cut the top of the base of off without affecting function. Haven’t decided yet.

This shows how much of the basepad interferes with the mag well.

Tagged. Would love to see what you end up doing.
Of course the real potential here will be the ability to use the 510 mags in the FNX. People have been asking for an FNX-10 Tactical for years. One of the aftermarket barrel manufacturers could have always made a conversion barrel, but without an engineered magazine it would be a crap shoot if the thing would run correctly.

That’s a bit of a gamble tooling up for a barrel with no viable magazine. While 10mm may run just fine in an unmodified .45 magazine, it likely would not. How many potential customers would want to start tweaking the feed lips on their $50 magazines? Especially if the end result could be that the mag ends up working poorly with either caliber.

But now with factory engineered mags that will work in the FNX frame, it may be easier to get a barrel in 10mm. If FN doesn’t want to make an FNX-10 for is, now maybe we’re a little closer to making our own.

Nice work! I was thinking of trying a baseplate swap test but now I don't have to. I still might do it on the 545 18 round mag just to see how bad it looks hanging out of the FNX. lol.
Based on photos, it appears the 15- and 18- round mags both use the same mag tube. The larger mag just uses a longer basepad.

Or am I wrong and the 18-round mag actually use a longer mag tube?

With either approach, it would be necessary to cut the top off of the 545 base pad in order to have it fit in the FNX grip/magwell. Which would be fine if you only intend to use it in the FNX. It would still work in the 545, but would look and feel kind of odd.
Correct. From what I can tell it's the same mag tube for both with a larger baseplate for the 18 rounder. I also wonder if the springs are the same or not. I guess I should take them apart after work and see. lol. I'll let you know.
So I went to take apart the mags and hit a snag right off the bat. On the 545 18 round magazine there's a tab that sticks up in the back. When I depress the tab in the baseplate to attempt to slide off the baseplate the tab extends out even further totally preventing the baseplate from sliding out. Or maybe I'm an idiot which is also very possible. lol

^Lol nice one there!

Anyhow, if it's anything like the extended mags from MecGar, you're supposed to lever that tab down and out, assuming the magazine is upside down in your hand and the baseplate is towards you.

Thanks romeo_alpha! That did the trick. I've installed those +2 mecgar basepads on CZ and Beretta mags but never took them off but should have known. Also when I was first trying to take apart the 18 round 545 mag I was using a flathead scewdriver to depress the nub in the base and the screwdriver head was too big to push it down far enough to allow that outer piece to fully move out of the way. I used a allen wrench and had to push it in quite a ways for it to move far enough to slide off the basepad. Easy peasy from here on out. lol.

Anyways, here's the spring from the 18 rounder. It's longer than the 15 round spring.
Now we know.

So I'm wondering how long until somebody 3D prints a base pad for the 545 18rd mag to fit the FNX??? And will someone like Apex produce a +2 for the 545 mags now?

Ok, so I was waiting for the Apex basepads, which were supposed to arrive today. But they didn’t. Tracking has been updated to Monday next week.

So I went ahead tonight and started cutting on the 545 basepad. I figured if I should mess it up too badly, I’ll still just put an Apex basepad on and shoot it that way in the FNX. I made a rough cut with a Dremil leaving some excess material. Then I finished it by sanding and checking fitup often.

To be honest, I like the looks of this better than the standard FNX basepad.

I see no reason why this won’t run in the FNX. I’ll report back when I have a chance to take this out and shoot it for function.

I finally got a chance to shoot the modified 545 mag. I’m happy to report it ran flawlessly. I loaded it up and emptied it four times, both in slow aimed fire and it rapid pairs. I was running 230 gr. coated lead RN ammo.

I ran it both suppressed and noisy. It ran fine both ways and locked the slide back on the last shot.

As noted earlier, I like the looks of this one better than the standard FNX mag. But I don’t know that it’s worth the effort for just another 15-round mag. At least this way if FN decides to drop the FNX-45 from their lineup, we will still have a source of factory mags.

Thought I would add what I did today as I finally picked the FDE 545 this afternoon. I have a FNP-45 and FNX-45 T and 10 mags.....9 of them are the old style follower from the FNP days and one is the newer follower from the FNX. The old mags work in the FNX but the newer mag will not work in the FNP. So to test if any of the 10 mags would work in the 545, I jammed one in the 545 and no go as it would not lock in on the mag catch. It was close but no cigar. So I took out the trusty Dremel and sanded off the rear of the baseplate on one of the FNX mags. The sanding went down to the bottom of the tube, cleaned it up and inserted it in the 545 and she works fine. Locks in, locks back and drops fine. So I now have 11 15 round mags and one 18 round mag for the 545 and won't have to spend $60 for new ones from Midwest. Are they ugly as hell ?....You Bet They Are.....but they work and about one minute per mag on the sanding saved me $600 on new 545 mags. If you don't mind FUGLY, give it a try on one. They work fine in the FNX also as nothing was altered except a small amount of plastic being removed at the rear of the mag basepad. The removal allows the rear of the mag to seat firmly and gives just enough clearance at the bottom of the grip insert.

Thanks for the response @grainfed3

Any thoughts or impressions on the 545 vs. FNX vs. FNP?

I’ve been looking for an 18-round 545 mag to see if it can be made to work in the FNX, as I did with the 15-round 545 mag. From what I have seen in photos online, I believe it should work. But everywhere has been sold out of the larger mags since the guns were released. I’m sure I’ll find one eventually.

But it would be a better solution to modify an 18-round mag for $60, as opposed to buying a 15-round FNX mag and the. Buying a $45 basepad to get up to 17 rounds.

Just got back from the bunker and need to make an update. The modification I did does work as far as locking the mag into the 545. The followers from the FNP mag days are different than the FNX -45 T followers. FN expanded the width of the newer mags at the top over the FNP mags therefore the new followers WILL NOT fit the older mags. I discussed this issue with one of the techs at FN last year. Due to the vertical tip of the follower that hits the slide release, it is smaller on the old followers and wider(front to back) on the newer ones. This difference causes the slide to NOT lock back if you use the old style FNP mags with the old slimmer follower. That smaller follower, when inserted into the gun, slides past the slide stop tab and will not lock the slide back. Both old and new mags will load rounds and tomorrow I will test both mags at the range for function. My Dremel work allowed the FNX mags to insert into the 545 and lock it back, but the old FNP mag follower will not lock the slide. Not a big deal as competition shooters often don't have lock-back slides. My old FNP mags have always worked in the FNX so I need to check the surface area of the slide lock tab on both guns. My guess it that the FNX slide lock tab is larger than the older FNP tab. I'll check that tomorrow.

Garrett........I will hit the range tomorrow for the first shots of the 545. My FNP-45 is literally more accurate than my FNX. It is a tack-driving laser beam and has been for 10 years. The FNX is right behind it so I won't get much sleep tonight waiting for my range to open. The 545, IMO, is a 509 on testosterone, but not that much. FN did improve the 545 trigger over the 509 by a large margin. I tried everything in the book to get my 509 to have a better feeling trigger. Changed all the springs and sear in the trigger housing several years ago but still was not that fond of the 509. Polished every single piece to a mirror finish, polished the striker safety plunger, smoothed out the striker channel, etc., but gave up and sold it. The 545 ergos over the FNX are appealing. I took the square corners off my FNX grip and rounded it out and stippled it with my favorite point. Made it much more comfy. I concur that it might be better to modify the 18 rounder.

I'll get around to checking out the 18 rounder tomorrow and seeing how it might be modified for my FNX. I just need to find someone locally with a 3D machine and I'd create my own basepads to fit both guns...similar to how the Glock 21 mags fit on my Glock 30S gun to give me 13 rounds with the sleeve taking up the slack. It was a happy day when I put my 545 in my FNX holsters and they fit at about 98%. Good to go there. I'll have around 300 rounds done tomorrow with the 545 and if it passes with no malfunctions, I'll be impressed. If all the old FNP mags work, even not locking back, I'll be even more thrilled. I'll report here tomorrow PM.

So I didn't make it to 300 but did 200 rounds. All of the FNX mags worked fine. As mentioned earlier, the older FNP mags with the older followers would not lock the slide back but everything else worked perfect. No issues or malfunctions. Made a softball sized hole in the head and X of the target out to 15 yards. The 545 is as accurate as one could need. I found a simpler way to make the FNX 15 round mags work in the 545. Take a dremel and just make a radius cut at the bottom of the backstrap of the grip to match the contour of the mag base in the rear. That allows the current mag base plate fit up enough to lock into the mag catch. No need to dremel the bottom of the mag plate as mentioned yesterday. Do they still look fugly in the gun....yep....but they work perfectly.

Midwest Gun Works got some 18-round 545 mags in stock, so I have a couple inbound. I should know in a week or so if these can be modified to work in the FNX.

Stay tuned.

MGW shipped pretty quickly. Mags arrived today and I started cutting & hacking. Not bad, overall.

I’ll try to get out tomorrow and take it for a test run before I modify the other basepad. But it locks up easily and it locks the slide back on an empty mag. It holds 18 without excessive force required for the last rounds and will still lock in place with a full mag.

Now I just need to find someone with a 545, just to see how funny my modified mags look in that gun.

Standard - 15 rd
Apex basepad - 17 rd
Modified 545 basepad - 15 rd
