So whats the point of the magazine safety? Has anyone ever removed it?

Anyone do any polishing on trigger and hammer components to try and lighten trigger pull?

Feel free to share any mods that you have done to improve things on the pistol.

In law enforcement, some depts want a magazine safety - if U fight over the gun with a perp, the officer can at least drop the mag to disable the gun. That's the idea.

Personally, I have no problem with it.

Everyone frets about tactical reloads and such - but realistically - why would U need to shoot the gun w/o a magazine in it. Sure, theoretically, I can assume a few scenarios, but they are not very likely.

Personally, I have no problem with a magazine safety, as long as it doesn't affect the trigger (I hear all the time from Hi Power owners that on the Hi Power, it does affect the trigger). On the Five Seven, I have no issues with it.

Thats a good point you made about dropping the mag to disable the gun, I hadn't thought of that. The mag safety doesn't bother me, just wondered why it was there.

The 57 isn't a pistol I would carry though, just one I wanted for plinking. I carry an H&K USP compact 40 cal on a daily basis and I love that gun. Some people think even though its a compact its still larger than what many carry but it doesn't bother me considering I carry open anyhow.

I don't think I've ever carried a handgun concealed unless you consider in the winter time my jacket covers the top of it. When seconds count I don't want to dig through several layers of clothing to draw my sidearm.

Here is a problem I have had. I am left handed, and used to carry a glock in a thigh holster for work. I was always in the passenger seat and more than a few times the seat belt would activate the mag release. I lost a few mags before I sorted it out. So, my SOP changed to doing a mag check when I took the seatbelt off. If it was a pistol with a mag safety, it may have been a problem. We used pistols as a backup. If your rifle goes down at close range, you transition to the pistol and not try to fix the rifle. It would have been a bad situation to say the least...

I don't see any tactical use for the safety. Mags do fall out at the worst times. It is not a good idea to dry fire on a bad guy. If you carry concealed, can you be sure that the mag won't be released on your draw stroke?

Seems to be just another thing to keep ignorant people from hurting themselves and suing a gun maker.

I guess use of such a pistol depends on your circumstances - A cop or person who carries on his waste is not likely to have this happen. I have carried concealed since 96, and have never had this happen. Admittedly, however, for the past 2 years, I have carried a P99 compact - That can't happen with that gun, based on the way the mag release is made. Just like the HKs.

With the way you were carrying the gun - I can see how it would be a problem. But I think a soldier, who generally relies on a rifle anyway, doesn't have a need for a magazine safety.

Even a guy at home using the gun for self defense possibly could - if U got into a scuffle with a burglar trying to shoot you with your own gun.

I think it was the French military who required that the FN high power have a mag safety built in. In this case, the safety hampered the trigger pull.

Murphy is out there and waiting to show up when you don't expect him. Instead of relying on low odds, I prefer no odds. A pistol without a mag safety will never have a mag safety issue that prevents it from operating when required.

Do the FNP series have a mag safety?

there are a few ways to use the mag safety to save your life in pretty hairy situations... i know a belgian cop that practically owed his life to his mag safety. he was checking out a call of individuals breaking into an office building. all lights are out and he draws his pistol and flashlight, proceeding inside.

while he held his pistol relatively close to his body, one of the perps surprised him by jumping from behind a corner (while the officer was checking if a door was locked or not in the hallway) and the perp was able to grab hold of the slide in and attempted to turn the gun towards the officer. the perp was a gorilla and he succeeded. in stunning presence of mind however, the officer dropped out his magazine, thereby activating the mag safety and preventing the gun from firing on the officer.

luckily, the perp was neutralised with a knee to the groin and somefollowup hits (we can blame Krav Maga for that reaction ;) ). but the situation couldve turned very grim indeed. this kind of scenarios are pretty much awful nightmares for all LEOs...

I'VE GOT ONE FOR YOU GUYS . I CARRY A FiveseveN . I'M LEFT-HANDED , SO I REVERSED THE MAG RELEASE SO I COULD PUSH IT WITH MY LEFT THUMB . I CARRIED MY FiveseveN IN A BLADETECH HOLSTER . I'M A BIG BOY & IN GETTING OUT OF THE VEHICLE I OFTEN LEAN AGAINST THE DOORPOST & USE IT FOR LEVERAGE TO ROLL AROUND TO GET OUT , PARTICULARILY LOW TO THE GROUND CARS OR WHEN PARKED CLOSE TO OTHER VEHICLES . DOING SO OFTEN ACTIVATES THE MAG RELEASE . MY WIEGHT PUSHING ON THE GUN INSIDE THE HARD HOLSTER MATERIAL CAUSED THIS , SO I REVERSED THE SAFTY BACK TO THE RIGHT-HANDED MODE . THIS STOPPED THE PROBLEM AND NOW I ACTIVATE THE SAFTY WITH MY LEFT INDEX FINGER WHICH WORKS FINE FOR ME .
ANOTHER RESULT OF THIS MODE OF CARRY WAS THAT THE STREAMLIGHT LIGHT/LASER COMBO BECAME LOOSE ON THE GUN RAIL . I ASSUME THIS WAS A RESULT OF THE HOLSTER BEING TIGHT ON THE GUN & LIGHT COMBO . THIS CAUSED UNDUE STRESS ON THE COMBO & MADE IT LOOSE . ANYONE ELSE EXPERIENCED THIS ? I USE THE GUN ALOT & HAVE PRACTICE SESSIONS ALMOST DAILY WHICH IS ALOT OF DRAWING & REHOLSTERING . :-x

I figured out how to disable the mag safety w/o destroying/removing it.

Locate the "leaf" spring on the right side of the mag well just under the trigger bar. GENTLY, pry the back end of the leaf spring toward the left side of the gun and lift up on it once you get it past the notch it sits in. Once you get it over that notch but under the trigger bar you're done.

BTW, going down with that leaf spring will accomplish the same end but you will need to bend it back straight after inserting a mag. Not fun.

There is no reason for a drooling rabbit but I like it anyway.
