I forget all the model #s, but my local shop has had a 15 round, 4" barrelled S&W stainless semi-auto sitting there for a long time. As these guns have been discontinued not too long ago, I kinda want one now.

I was up there comparing the FNP45 to the XD45, and I remembered the gun - It is $100 off, so it's like $430.

Anyway, it has a bit of surface rust on it - Just barely. The salesguy got some flitz and polished the slide up beautifully.

However, there were some spots on teh frame he couldn't get off. If he could have gotten the frame to look as nice as the slide, I was going to buy it. Oh well...

I knew my wife was gonna be upset anyway :x

At the next gunshow I go to, I may look at those, if I can find a NEW one in 9mm. If so, I'll put off the XD45 purchase for a while.

I use to carry a 5906 at work a long time ago and they are one of the best 9mm's I've had. I would like to have another one myself. Seen some good ones on gunbroker recently. Only smith auto I got left is a 4506-1 and probly got 1000 rounds thru and still runs like a top. It was in that pic with my PS90. I know you cant get a new one because they only make the for LEO depts. anymore. If you can find a good one they last forever.

No offense Ship or Vulcan... not a fan. Bad triggers, wrong grip angle, FTE problems. Granted, I have fired only 3... but that's enough for me. If you bring one to the range Ship... I'll pass. :p

Was that a fat joke?!!! :-D

I admit the P99 has a great grip shape. But I just can't get used to the mag release. I tried the P99 DAO, P99QA, and the P99AS, I shoot them fine but no way in heck do I want to have to quick change a mag under stress with one. I have Karma'd or sold them all except...

I still have a P99cAS NIB with a Milt Sparks Watch Six Holster left if you want it. :D

No offence taken. Some Smiths had problems. Before we got the 4506-1 my Dept. tryed the 4516 first. Nothing but problems with that gun. I went thru 2 guns and 2 barrels on the last one and still could'nt get it to function right. The one I got now was the best and never had a malfuntion with it. I always shot a 99 or 100 at qualification and felt comfortable carrying it. I have never owned a Sig before but I am really lookig hard at getting one of the 220 super match.

S&W make great wheel guns, but I don't like any of their semiauto's. The angle of the grip frame, the slide sits to high, or they make a clone of some other maker, you name it. S&W needs to hire some new innovative engineers to design their semiauto's cuz the vultures are circuling in my opinion.

Used S&W 9mm sell for high $200s all the time if you have access to an FFL...CDNN usually has them. Police trade ins...just a thought.

Don't think I'd pay much more than $325-350 for a used Smith auto. Weak demand and quite a number were produced. No knock. They are nice guns.

Have experience with my brothers 915 which is a nice shooter.

I had a 669 in the 80's. The frame cracked. I also had a 4006, the barrel also got a crack in it. Both dealers were amazed. Needless to say S&W repaired each - then I traded them in for Sigs.

I would only get on of these S&W Semi-Auto pistols, if I know S&W would take care of these types of issues.

Never had a problem with the revolvers.. I guess it's just bad luck..

BTW - I really loved the 669 which is now the 6069 I believe.. 13+1

Thanks.

Academy Sports advertised 9mm and 40 cal S&W 3rd gen pistols this week.

As they have been discontinued, I guess Academy got a large # of them.

My local Academy had 4 of them. Unfortunately, I couldn't find any in good enough condition. All were "new," but 2 had rust on the slide stope. And the other 2 had various scratches on the slide and frame.

Sucks.. Oh well...

+1 on some of the other members here; never been a fan of the 3rd generation S&W autoloaders. Some day I may get an FBI issue 1076 for novelty's sake, but that's it.

...BUT I'm a huge (no, not fat :x ) fan of the old M39 9mm and the M52 .38SWC Targetmaster. Wouldn't mind trying out one of the new M952 9mm Targetmaster Longslides either. Eye candy:

I really liked the old 39's myself. The very first pistol I bought myself was a model 39 in nickle in 1977. Wish I still had it today. Since then I've had a Mod59, 6906, 5906, 3913 and 4506-1. And never had one problem with any of them.
