I've had 3 scopes have issues while mounted on my 17. All are from Bushnell's Elite Tactical line. Any owner will tell you they're built like a tank and there are countless positive reviews on youtube and Sniper's Hide.

The first one is a 3-21x G2DMR. The 17 shook it so much a little of the lube got on the inside of the ocular lens. You can clearly see it if you hold a flashlight to it, but can't be seen while in use, so I kept it and just mounted it on another rifle. The next two are 1-6.5x. The illumination in both died before I got through the first box of rounds. These are $1000-$1200 scopes that have recieved overwhelmingly positive reviews.

I now have a $400 Burris 3.5-10x MTAC mounted on a PEPR on it without issues after a couple hundred rounds. The 17 being a scope killer may just be a myth, but my experience say otherwise.

I have a MK6 3-18 on mine. So... what's your point? My point is you don't need to spend $3,000 on an optic for the 17 for it to be reliable. There quality scoped out there for less. I didn't claim weaver was one of them simply because I don't know anything about which I feel I was crystal clear about.

OP that could very well be a good scope and you may have gotten a bad egg. Don't discount the thing because you had one break on you. If anyone here can name a optics company that had A 100% 00000 failure track record please point them out and I will be sure to buy from them. Yes S&B have put out lemons before. It happens.
I agree , I also mentioned in another post that I shoot with guys using $500 burris and Vortex that seem to work with zero problems all on Scar 17s Quality usually comes with a price but that's not always true . Guess I will get to the point , I would send that scope back have it fixed if it breaks again ... Buy another brand besides Weaver , and your right every company has a bad day just some have more then others

I would suggest that SCAR 17's, during the design process, were most likely only tested with military-grade optics. Hate to say it, but that's probably what you need to equip your SCAR with - a military-grade optic - this isn't a little 5.56mm AR-15 where you can let the charging handle touch your nose while you pull the trigger.

My experience has been similar. I finally caved and bought a NightForce and it's been problem free. Thought it was the Burris mount but that wasn't it either. Went through a Burris XTR Tactical, 2 different Kahles 1.5-6 Helia's and a Zeiss Z-Point........the Z-point the front lens actually shattered. Love this rifle but you better put optics on it that are "overly" well made.

If there are any complaints with the SWFA SS (super sniper) HD (heavy duty) series of rifle scopes, I would like to hear them... they seem to be the best value in terms of cost verses what you get in an HD FFP scope:

SWFA SS HD Riflescopes | SWFA

I have run the ~$1,000 SS 1-6 tactical FFP illumined on my Scar 17 and I love it except for two things, it is as heavy as any other heavy duty scope, and as my vision becomes poorer with age I feel I need more magnification than 6x to justify the added weight of a scope:

SWFA SS HD 1-6x24 Tactical 30mm Riflescope | SWFA

Still, it is the scope I will mount for use out to a couple hundred yards (farther if I could see better) as it functions acceptably as a 1x red dot as well as a 1-6x scope, negating the need for an RMR mounted to the scope.

If I could afford a Mk6 with an RMR, that is what I would run. It is on my list to upgrade to one someday, but it is a l-o-n-g list.

SWFA "tax day" sale should be coming up next week, usually a $200 discount on that scope, I hopped on the Black Friday sale (only 2x a year they have a sale) and bought 2 for $750, sold them to "upgrade" to a Kahles K16i 1-6 & Nightforce 2.5-10x32. I can honestly sale the glass is very good, turrets are good, reticle is good and ilkumination is suprisingly good. I'm not sure how it would hold up to the SCAR's recoil but if you can get it on a sale it is a great value.

Dang three scopes put down by your 17 you might hold the record around here. I heard the bushy's tactical line were good optics also and they aren't cheap either.

Your probably right about that NF Elcan, S&B, Leupold, are a few and I've had good luck with my USO also.

You guys act like there are no other .308 rifles with a good chunk of mass cycling back and forth. Ever see the HK G3 stripped down?

Now, granted that there are scopes made specifically for the AR rifle in 5.56. Those may not fair too well. But there are plenty of reasonably priced scopes made to handle calibers much more powerful than the mere .308 cartridge.

Also FN shooting teams don't use cantilever scope mounts. They use the good old fashion rings with the picatinny bases.

To be fair those 3 Bushies held up mechanically. I loved the reticle on the 1-6.5 and would've been fine if it weren't for the dead illumination. And all three would still be usable sans illumination. I have another 3-21x DMR that have held up fine on a Larue OBR after hundreds of rounds. It's kinda funny how the 17 shook the other so hard the lube inside got thrown around. (FYI the 3-21x is not illuminated)

Contact the optic manufacturer for repair. See what happens. Sometimes you get an item that isn't up to par, someone missed something during assembly/QC.

Update:

Hey All,

Sent the Weaver back to OpticsPlanet and decided on a Vortex PST 4-16 FFP. OP was great and adjusted my pricing due to the issues with the Weaver. Took it to the range today and sighted it in. It works Great! Smacking steel at 100 then 200 yards on day 0 was a good feeling.

Thanks All

:)

Hello All,

i just recently purchased a Weaver 4-20x50 (Model 800380) Tactical scope for my Scar 17s.
View attachment 36956

I have it mounted with a Burris PEPR QD mount.

View attachment 36957

So so after taking it out to the range today and putting ~40 rounds through it the reticle
has canted. As you can see from the pic above the external scope housing is still
aligned and is holding with integrity. However, the reticle inside has canted as the picture illustrates:

Has as anyone encountered this before? I suppose I will just return this to opticsplanet for a refund.
This is very disappointing.

Thanks in advance all.
I concur with boom and Kameron-- personally I have a vortex on mine, never had an issue with it.

Agreed on the Weaver Tactical line quality. I have one on my 700 .308 and have at least 500 rounds through with no issues. Sometimes you just get a bad one.

I talked a friend of mine in to putting the fixed 10X SWFA SS scope on his SIG 716 and it lasted about 150 rounds, elevation tracking went awry--had to send it back to the factory. Of course SWFA replaced it no questions asked!!!! We mounted it with a LaRue mount so we couldn't blame the mount. We just reinstalled the scope and have yet to put rounds down range, will let you know how the second one holds up!!! My brother has a SWFA SS fixed 10X on his 300 win. Mag and has had zero trouble but its a bolt!

In my personal experience, if you want a good optic for the $ get a meopta. Good glass & well built! Mine held up fine on a cantilever bobro mount on my 17.

Fellahs that's an 8-900 dollar optic. I wouldn't exactly call the price cheap. Now the quality of the optic I guess would need to be determined by one reading reviews and what not. The mount yes it's cheap.
The PEPR may be inexpensive but I have the same mount on my SCAR 17S. It holds a Leupold VX-III 6.5-20X50 scope with no problems at all. I just think you got a bad Weaver scope. I've heard good reports on them. Send the scope back for repair/exchange then remount it. If it does't hold up then consider another scope line. Just my 2 cents.
