I'm really glad to see this thread. I still have an FNP-45 that I bought in November of 2011, and in spite of owning several other autos and revolvers I consider the FNP to be my primary "go-to" handgun. It's my nightstand gun and has been for years. The main reason I bought it was the combination of caliber and capacity, and it was just an easy decision for me when I saw it in the gun store. I've considered getting a Glock 41, but I can't justify that to myself when I like the FNP so much. Certainly with Glock I'd have better aftermarket support (holsters, mags, mag pouches, sights, lights, etc), but I really don't think I'll ever replace the FNP. A big bonus was that the very first time I shot it I could easily HIT with it. It was simply a good fit, I'm sure you know what I'm talking about.
The reason I'm happy to have found this thread is that for a long while after buying the FNP, I had a very hard time finding information about it on the internet. There are still a lot of people who have never heard of FN or FNH, in spite of the company's long history. There seemed to be very few people posting pics or info about the gun, and info on sights, holsters, and accessories was scant.
One of the things I had a problem with was finding spare mags. It took almost two years to get my hands on more 15-round magazines, and they still weren't cheap. I ended up with four of them, along with two 14-rounders. Then I started reading about "magazine problems", and I honestly can't remember if it was the 14 or the 15-round mags that were supposed to be causing problems. I've posted pics showing a difference in the floorplates under the spring (on the 15-rounders). The plates that are NOT flat (the wedge-shaped ones) look "funky" to me, like something is really wrong. With the one mag I have with the flat plate, I have no problems. With the wedge plates, once I get 6-8 rounds loaded the magazine internals rattle like a '65 Ford pickup on a gravel road. When I took the 15-rounders apart, it appears that there's NO WAY for the spring to sit flat on the plate. It looks like maybe there SHOULD have been a hole drilled in the center rib of that floor plate, because the springs have that nasty hook at the end on the bottom and the hook just kind of rides on top of that rib. On the flat plate the spring also just rests on it, but at least it's resting FLAT.
Does anyone have any idea what the heck this is all about? These are all factory FNH USA mags, in the blue, black and white box, product number 47456-2 for the FNP-45. Any information would be very helpful and appreciated.
While I'm at it, I recently bought a Streamlight TLR-4 to try on the FNP, and even with the six "keys" tried every possible way the light/laser combo just refuses to fit well enough to use. None of the keys allow the light to come back close enough to the trigger guard for my finger to reach, unless i completely give up my firing grip to reach the toggle. I read somewhere that the "1913" key was the correct one, but I only got keys "A"-"F" in the package with the light. Anyone else have any issues with the TLR-4?
I know this is long-winded, but I've been dying to ask these questions for quite a while!!
