I'm not a SCAR owner yet (17S hopefully soon) but from searching the internet and looking at some videos it seems that a vast majority of owners/shooters have a vertical grip of some sort.

Is there something about the SCAR's fore-end that causes a lot of folks to put on a vertical grip?

Is it too wide to grip comfortably or is it because of the lack of handguard space like the KAC RAS found on the M4 and M4A1 Carbine?

I don't use a vertical grip on my AR-15's to get the best accuracy possible so I was hoping that my habits and set-up on the SCAR 17 could closely mimic what I usually do.

Thanks

Yeah, do what's comfortable. I have an AFG on mine. I've seen people using AFG's, VFG's, no added grip (although I'd recommend rail covers then).

VFGs are useful for those who carry their weapons for hours at a time and also to move the weapon in the prone position and as an overtravel stop when setting up on barricades.

It ads an additional point of leverage with an orientation that is easy to get to with the weapon out in front of you or slung low.

I don't actually grasp my VFG as a grip for my weak hand when shooting but curl my fingers against it with my hand in a modified conventional forend grip but I am grabbing that sucker broomstick style to hold the weapon suspended in low ready when I need my strong hand free for a second and from the ground when wiggling into different orientations with the bipod deployed.

If I were just shooting 2/3Gun or working as a cop getting in/out of a patrol car I wouldn't bother running a VFG and just run a hand stop instead.

Well, it's been said well, but I'll say it again...do what feels right for you. It's your gun. I use mine mainly as a hand stop...but sometimes as a back scratcher.

I've got them on my 2 SCARs but they only are on there for the SHTF situation. When I take mine shooting either for hunting or off the bench the fore grip comes off. Mine incorporates a good light and laser so to me it kills several SHTF items with one stone so to speak.

I don't have an issue with reciprocating charging handle and I don't use VFG. It's all about learning how to use a particular gun.
I never have an issue when I am firing it. Though I have scraped my fingers a couple of time on the scope mount when pulling the bolt handle back. But it's a minor problem.
