A Michigan woman was able to defend her home and two young children from an armed, masked intruder — by aiming her firearm at the man.

The woman, who asked to remain anonymous, lives in Ionia County, Michigan, with her two children. Her husband is serving in Afghanistan.
Around 1 a.m. on Friday morning, a man in a ski mask came to her front porch. He carried both a shotgun and a machete, and used the latter to scratch the window of the door.

“I kept hearing, ‘tap, tap, tap,’” she recalled during an interview with WOOD-TV.
The woman ran to get her gun. When she returned to the front of the house, she pointed it right at him. This caused the would-be intruder to retreat. He attempted to enter through the back of the house, but the gun once again deterred him.

When police arrived, they chased the suspect briefly until he threw down his weapon. The suspect claims to be “an ordinance thief,” though police aren’t sure what he meant by that.
Once unmasked, the suspect was revealed to be a 15-year-old male. Police are baffled by the teenager’s actions, and said his motivations are totally unclear.

But one thing is clear, at least to the woman: Her family may have been in mortal peril, had she not been armed.
