Gunmaker Beretta USA seriously considered Greensboro for a $45 million manufacturing plant that ultimately will land in Gallatin, Tenn., Gate City officials confirmed Thursday.

The new plant, which is expected to begin production in the first quarter of 2015 at the Gallatin Industrial Park, will initially create 300 jobs.

Dan Lynch, president of the Greensboro Economic Development Alliance, said that Beretta officials visited Greensboro in the late fall to consider two sites: Reedy Fork Ranch, which had about 300 acres of available land, and Rock Creek Center in eastern Guilford County, which could offer almost 100 acres.

The visit, which took several days of preparation, included lunch at the Stoney Creek Golf Club, a presentation by Maureen Little from the North Carolina Community College System, and a ride on a state helicopter to get a bird's eye view of both locations, Lynch said. He said Greensboro officials also outlined guidelines for city, county and state incentives, a request made by Beretta. The project was codenamed "Project Clover."

Jeff Reh, a member of Beretta USA's board, said the company looked at 80 different sites across seven states before choosing Gallatin, Tenn. He said that "one specific site" in North Carolina made its list of six finalist locations. He did not disclose the location of that site.
