I'm prob biased but I have been completely satisfied with my DPMS LR-308. Shoots better than I....been out to 900 yards with her hitting reactive "ivans". Pretty consistent shooter.

I did a fair amount of modifying, but it shot very well bone stock....except for the trigger! Def needed to be replaced...and it was.

What is the most outstanding top of the line 308 Semi.
It depends on what application you have in mind and what things you value in a firearm... Are you looking for a battle rifle? Are you looking more for a clean room, target rifle? Do you care about whether a rifle requires a lot of specialized tools or simply needs a 7.62 / .308 round to be used as a tool? Do you need a lot of after-market support or a ready supply of inexpensive mags? Are you willing to sacrifice a little bit of accuracy to get better reliability or durability? Are you willing to sacrifice ruggedness to gain accuracy?

These are the questions you need to ask yourself because every rifle is going to compromise in one area to deliver in another. It's just a matter of what offers the best package for your needs.

how about an m14

they come in small medium or large

16'' barrel socom 16/2

18'' barrel scout/bush rifle

24'' m1a

its a battle proven platform

or maybe an FN FAL

insanely durable and accuracy is standard

also the mags are dirt cheap, about 9 bucks a piece
(unlike 40 dollar a piece ar10 mags)

you can get them in 16'' these days too

i would vote for the FAL or the G3/HK91. either are exceptional, battle proven rifles, with the edge going to the G3 for standard accuracy.

in both cases, mags are plentiful and replacement parts/add ons are somewhat plentiful.

I agree with BreakerDave, do you have a specific feature like accuarcy or durability that is most important? Is there a price limit?

I have a DSA FAL that built like a tank and is very dependable, I wouldn't expect it to win any accuracy contests but with the right ammo the groups are very respectable. Even better than I was expecting. You said "top of the line" and this isn't that, but it is relatively inexpensive and easy to find accesories and parts for, so as an all around 308 rifle it's a good choice in my opinion.

I've read posts from several people on different forums about the DPMS and other 308 rifles on the AR15/AR10 design and the majority seem very pleased with them. I would like to have one as well if it was piston driven. I'm not sure if the Panther is piston now or not. I need to check into that.

But my choice of a "top of the line" kick butt semi-auto 308 would be the M25 White Feather with it's Krieger barrel. There are other custom M1A rifle makers out there but the White Feather would get my vote.

A Smith Enterprises Crazy Horse would be cool too.

The M1A is the best in my opinion. Greatest accuracy and easier to clean then the G3. The G3 also gets hot pretty fast while the M1A doesn't. :?

Here are my G3 clones. They are good and accurate but the front hand guard gets hot after about 60 rds.

The AR-10 type is generally the most accurate. The M1A can be brought to an extreme level of accuracy, but at a higher price than that of a comparable AR-10.

The M1A is also very dependable, (more so than the AR-10), but it must be kept greased.

The FAL is the very most dependable of all, but is very rarely (if ever) chosen as a platform for a match grade rifle.

I suggest you pick a high-end Stoner type rifle, or a custom M1A. And budget about $800+ for glass. Perhaps you could go to a match and see what you like.

You're solidly in M1A/M14 territory... You should check out the M14 forum:

DSA SA58/FAL :? I have an AR10 as well, but I have to vote on my DSA... adjustable gas system rocks, hands down. (and easier to clean!)

If you want a 1000yd pea shooter, then AR10, and get from GA Precision, here's what he does:
