This pirate situation does not make sense.

They make about 100 million dollars a year hijacking ships off the coast of Samolia. They have about 14 ships in their possesion right now. They have captured more than 60 ships just this year. And they do it with little boats!

Why would anyone even consider sailing near that country without the means to blow those boats out of the water? How can they get insurance to sail there?

A ship full of T72 tanks guns and ammo can't defend itself?

Why are contries paying these pirates? Why has no one followed them home and blown them to bits?

From what I understand Maritime law forbids vessels from having weapons on board except for military ships of course? Kind of stupid if you ask me.

In the article I read it said the authorities were doubtful the pirates would even be able to get the tanks off the ship. Now the ammo and other arms on the ship could be a problem.

These pirates operate out of a "mother ship" that sends speed boats with RPG teams. Seems to me you could manage to fight them off with small arms. RPG's can't be that accurate from a bouncing speed boat. Of course I guess I shouldn't underestimate the Somali's. They are RPG experts considering they were able to down our UH-60's with them.

I wish our Navy had authorization to take these guys down with extreme prejudice.

I was just reading that one crew member has died and the US is waiting for the russians to arrive. I suspect the Russians arent going to be passive.

The pirates have stated they will fight to the death, and thats how it will probably go down.

I doubt theyll sink the ship as the cargo is too valuable. Unfortunately they will most likely consider the cargo more valuable then the crew if history is any indicator.

So...

What does Russia do when they get their forces there? Send in an assault team by boat, helicopter, or divers? Gunship? Assault team with helicopter sniper support?

Should be interesting to say the least. Maybe they'll make it into a movie one day.

I was thinking the exact same thing. They'll smoke em' out with laughing gas. Just like the theater.

ANY government should just send a ship disgised as a friendly cruise ship but be loaded to the hilt with weapons. When the pirates get close they open fire and blow the bejezus out of them!! Simple!!!!

AS for this ship with the tanks? How about blowing a small nuke or MOAB above the ship killing everyone aboard and then going in to salvage?

COME ON PEOPLE!!!

M1P90, man you beat me to it. But I'd use a regular cargo ship with a normal crew as bait, but have a couple of attack subs to do the job. Those sub guy's need a little "live" target practice. This will also put fear into the bad guys, since they won't know what may be lying beneath their keel.

Furyataurus is correct about maritime law. Commercial ships are not allowed to have offensive weapons. Some areas don't even allow handguns aboard ships.

Yeah, they'll probably do the same. Dump a bunch of toxic gas into the ship and hope for the best but expect everyone to die. I thought they took care of the theater ordeal poorly. It seemed like someone didn't quite think things through all the way.

Good thing that maritime law is working so well to keep any pirates from attacking innocent unarmed civilians.

I guess the right thing to do is just keep paying the criminal and murderers millions of dollars a year just as we are doing.

Wouldn't want to cause a maritime fuss or possible hurt a murdering thug by defending ones self.

A lot of the pirates from these impoverished countries are the same people that are supposed to protect the maritime vessels.

Guy's maybe there is some confision here. These Pirates aren't attacking in international waters, they are attacking in Somalian waters. Now if I was the Captian of a Civilian ship that was delivering goods to this area I would mandate an escort or find another captian. The companies that are selling their crap there, are in for profit and could got 2 ****s about the crew.

Territorial waters is 12 N. miles.
International waters is 200 N. mile off the coast.

It is distance between 12 miles and 200 miles where the pirates attack. Why? Because at 200miles a civilian ship can have all the weapons they want on board. However, inside of 200 miles they can be seized and searched for contraban be that country. If they are within 12 Miles of that country, they can do what ever they want with the ship, the crew, and the cargo and no one can stop them, Legally.
