CMMG vs High Desert Dog vs Tros

6865 Views 30 Replies 15 Participants Last post by  Jarod Legsdin
going to start my tax stamp for my sbr, and I am wondering what everyone's thoughts are on the barrel. The High Desert Dog is SS, the CMMG is Chrome oly, and obliviously cutting down the stock barrel keeps it CHF.......is one better than the other? Its obliviously cheap to cut the barrel, but than im out a stock barrel. they other two are the same price. Recommendations?

I would not even consider HDD.

I went with CMMG for mine.

Cutting the stock barrel by tros is what I did, that is much cheaper and you will never go back to full length once you shoot it short, so the full length will just hang around

That bad? I come from the AR world, and specifically use fn chf barrels for everything. I only heard of high desert dog when searching for ps90 barrels
Mark with tros, is the only way to go! Do it and don't look back he is a great guy that does great work.

+1 for TROS and Mark McWillis. Good guy. Great work. He did 2 of mine.

He will be doing another one of mine also. Already told him it will be coming. Now I just need to get off my lazy butt and get it shipped out to him.

Mark isn't one of the choices, he is the ONLY choice.

For me- I purchased another barrel, only because I wanted ability to switch to longer length upon desire.

Just out of curiosity after shooting it as an SBR do you think you will ever go back to the full length barrel?

NO! It was made to be short. Balance is so much better. Shoots like a dream short. Imo.

Honestly I think I could. You see my barrel was 10.5 that I put on my ps90, and I had to choose what to leave on it (p90 FH, or suppressor adapter) due to the spring loaded barrel. In having both muzzle devices I have to in set the barrel to switch them out. In doing so-- the barrel is simply ready to slide out of the upper. I like the idea of switching them out, as there really is a performance issue in the 5.7 round with the barrel going from 16 to 10. I also have explored the idea of threading the longer barrel to accept a suppressor. The Sbr ps90 is awesome and I really enjoy it, don't get me wrong. For example with the long vs short barel- 5.7x28 197 will pierce soft body armour, where as with the short barrel it won't, as a result of the decreased velocity (knowing I wiill get comments here and request to post- my source: has been YouTube videos - realizing and accepting claims for aunthencity) even withy he argument that it does not-- there is a big drop in velocity from one barel to the other. One other thing. My Sbr barrel is 1:9, where as stock is 1:7. Knowing this- we know that a 1:7 twist will perform differently than a 1:9.

Stryker Enterprises is making a barrel. Will be out soon.

HDD should not be an option.

Thanks. Hdd will be out for sure.
I pre ordered one of Stryker's barrels, I'll just leave the old one on a shelf in case i need a spare some day.

Are the pre orders on his site?

So in about 3 years they will be available?

Come on man, seriously?
I have the CMMG barrel on my recently completed PS90 SBR. So far, so good. I also plan on sending my cut-off FN barrel to TROS as a back up. Of course that's only if I ever quit getting distracted by every shiny thing that catches my eye.
HDD did my barrel in 07 and it is a great shooter. I can't call it a tack driver because no PS90 in either flavor is really a "tack driver". Other members have had dealings with HDD recently and some have had difficulties.

TROS is an option and I have bought a couple of adapters from him and his products are fine. I can not speak for the SBR though, although many members like the work that he does.

Stryker is releasing a short barrel for the PS90 and if like his other items, it will be worth the wait while he gets this product off the ground.

CMMG did a bunch of barrels then left the market. They decided to come back into the market not long ago. I have one of their newer barrels but am not sure what to do with it considering the adapter I got for it is not concentric (according to them) and they sent me an email indicating that they will replace the faulty adapter soon. I am still waiting, though they indicated replacement sometimes in Feb. I have concerns that it may be the threading of the barrel as well as the threading of the adapter that is causing the baffle strikes in silencers that have been reported. The only way to be sure (for me at least due to testing equipment constraints) is to wait for the new adapter and mount the barrel and if there are other reports of baffle strikes, then it is the threading on the barrel that is the problem. Don't know if I want to sacrifice one of my cans to try this option though. I have to admit that CMMG when they finally admitted to this problem, has been working to solve it and they did not report that there was any problems with the barrels. BTW, the adapter in question is the 1/2X28 TPI one.

These are the options that I know about. Of the four mentioned above, only Stryker is a forum vendor at this time.
