shooting federal 168 grain match grade (sierra king) ammo
but longer ranges are hard to get to
wondering what people think their effective range is
I have Nightforce NXS 2.5-10x32 optic

not bragging, just fact...I can hit 300 yard silouhettes all day long with just iron sights....so I'm thinking 600 -800 yard shots are well within the capability of the rifle and optic...I'd just hope I could be a decent enough shooter to prove that out.
wondering if people have hit consistently and what they think effective/max range is. With this grain bullet, I think it would still be terminal at 600 yards, but not sure if it would be a fight-stopper at 800 yards....
what do you shooters all think?

600-800 yard effectiveness is without a doubt consistently capable with your ammo and optic so long as you're doing your part. I run the Leupold MK8 CQBSS 1-8 with either FGMM 175 or Gorilla 175 SMK's. We make hits consistently on man sized steel out to 900 and have reached out to 1100....when they're was money on the table! I used 168's when I first got my rifle and they did well, once I tested 175's it was like my rifle turned on.... big difference in accuracy at all distances. Noticed you're in AZ, i'm in the Central Phoenix area..... where you at?

During one of our local Scoped Rifle Matches I printed an 8" 5-shot group at 500 and was really happy with that. At the time I had a SWFA 3-9x mounted on top and was firing 168gr. FGGM. I've not tried 175gr. bullets yet, but I've got some 178gr. AMAX bullets I'd like to work up a load for. With irons I can bang 24" steel plates out to 600 yards without much difficulty. Still searching for the perfect piece of glass.

Hey there Chewbacca! LOVE the nickname!
so....I'm in PV, between Scottsdale and Phoenix.
let's grab coffee sometime and then meet up maybe to shoot sometime?
I usually go to Ben Avery, but haven't figured out how to shoot longer than 200 yards there...sometimes I can get access to a LE range, but hard to do.
any thoughts on where to go shoot longer distance? I'd be willing to put some money on the table to motivate you to shoot (and help me hit out to 1000 yards of so)....after you give me a few pointers on shooting at that range!
:)

Furthest was a yote a scootch over 675yds using 168grain smk Trijicon tr24g optic. I honestly didn't think I would hit him

It's an 800 yard rifle I'm using a Nightforce 2.5-10x32 now. The tr24g is on my winchester70 in 458win mag

CJ, yeah we can grab a cup of joe sometime and get out and shoot. I rarely go to Avery, can't get anything done there with the short shooting periods. We have a semi private spot in the Tonto we shoot precision at with steel going from 400 to 1400 yards. Got your PM and will answer those questions there.

Best prone group for me at 600yds was a 10 shot 4.668" group (MRO measured). The glass I used for that day was the 3-18x44 Mark 6 with a H-59 ret. I used the same ammo you stated FGMM 168gr. No matter what 175gr -178gr ammo I test, whether it be factory or my handloads that are very well done - even checked to have a max .001" run out on a NECO before being selected for group checks - this rifle hates anything above 168gr with it's 1in12" twist bbl. Oh how I wish it was a 1in11", or even 1-10"!! But then again I didn't buy it to be a long range rifle. It does just fine for what it is. For real long range "small spot shots" I'll take my one of my bolt guns that were made just for that purpose. Still love the old game of oranges at 1000yds. with no benches allowed. Now that's a blast! :icon_e_smile:

You'll still have roughly 600 ft lbs of energy at 800 yards, way more than enough to eliminate a threat with a decent torso shot.
I've shot at ~600 yards with non-match ammo and got decent hits on a 66% IPSC target. It's def. what I'd consider "battle accuracy". With match ammo, I'm sure you could hit 1-1.5MOA groups all the way to 7-800 yards.

yea, I agree...what kinda scope is that on your avatar rifle pic? cool looking
Who was your question posed to? If it was to me - 1.1-8x24 CQBSS with the H27-D ret. If not - forgive me - I always talk too much. :icon_lol:
