Well I'm very inexperienced when it comes to optics and longer range precision shooting. I only have an Eotech 512 on my FS, but I have been interested in picking up some type of magnifier.

The Eotech 3x seems to be sufficient for someone at my level. I like that it is flip to side and I can move back and forth between the optici and the holosight. The 4x is not worth it IMO (an extra .5 for an extra $400).

So question is: Is it worth it? Is it durable rugged and reliable for a basic range shooter, who will take some carbine classes later this summer and who def wants to be prepared when zombies come.

Its certainly worth the price of admission. It is a very rugged piece of hardware. The first time I ever flipped it over I was a bit worried about the wear and tear, but it has no reticles of its own, so it has nothing to get messed up inside. A buddy of mine has one on his AR, and he uses it on the police emergency response team. I've shot with it pretty extensively, so I finally just ordered one for my AR as well. Maybe someday my FS will get one too. Availability might be an issue, as EOTech is always running behind on these. After I placed my order I was notified that it might take a month or longer. I agree with you completely about the price difference between the 3x and 4x though. It just doesn't seem worth it.

Two things I like about mine;

In order to screw it up, you'd have to beat it with a sledge hammer - it's prety much sailor-proof, and;

You can use it, flip it in place, or flip it to the side in a hearbeat, or just pop the whole thing on or off in about two seconds because the ARMS mount is very fast.

Makes for very nice presision shooting in the 50 - 200 yard zone.

Very clear optics with good outstanding low light capability - you don't lose a lot of light transmission because of the large 13mm exit pupil diameter.

I'd love to have one on my PS90 to shoot at 100 yards. But the damn thing just costs too much.

I've tried the 3X FTS with a 552 on a buddies AR and it's a very nice setup and yes, very durable. I'll eventually get one for the FS2000, but like FuNguns, I've got to fatten up the old piggy bank first.

I just ordered a 3X FTS--it's a must-have. Saved $112 using live.com's cashback thingie.

Thanks to everyone for the reviews and tips, etc. to help me make my decision on the Eotech!

I got the 3X magnifier, and it is worth every penny. My only complaint about it is that together with the Eotech in front of it, they take up a ridiculous amount of room, but that's fine on a Tactical model.

My 557 with magnifier arrived a couple of days ago. I can't wait to get it mounted and sighted in.

so did the price ever go down on those 4x the last site i checked the 3x were $400 and the 4x were $700 how eotech came up with the rational for that will forever remain a mystery

The prices are still going up.

Ordnance Outsellers sold me the kit with the 557, the 4x magnifier, and the FTS flip over base, for $995.00. It comes in a nice plastic case too.

So, I don't know how OpticsPlanet can ask 800 buck for just the magnififier and flip over base. That's just crazy.
