Hi All,
I have been working on a number of used magazine shells I picked up cheap, some have various issues with dents, out of square, etc.

I'd like to start a thread on tips/tricks to fix your mags.
list of common issues, solutions found, etc.

Here are a couple of things I learned:

Repair issues:
>dents to the sides of the mag: Use a socket of the same thickness, slide into mag until it is under the dent, and use a ball peen hammer to straightenp

>feed lips bent:
for minor issues, can straighten with pliers. (I am working on more options for serious issues)

>out of square- squeeze in a wood-faced vise at opposite corners to move it back into square

>Base Plate doesn't fit - when replacing a base plate, I found that sometimes they are too long, or an out of square mag prevents it from inserting all the way. For minor fitting, if you can't completely straighten the mag you can snip the leading edge into shape with a pair cutters. Sometimes the base plate doesn't ride flush along the bottom of the mag along the flanges. You can carefully tweak the flanges where necessary to allow the necessary alignment.

Tips and Tweaks
>Do not lube your magazine unless you want dust/dirt to accumulate where it shouldn't
>Number your Mags with a sharpie - if you have a mag that isn't feeding right, better to ID it and address it later.
>DIY magazine pull tabs (that don't bind on a tight magazine pouch) - see my later post.

I am working on a mag block diy using the rivet epoxy method.

Magazine Mandrel Info

I am cross posting this from FAL files, for some reason they never approved my membership over there.
Magazine feed lips out of shape - The FAL Files

Basically there is a mandrel set that allows you to hammer them back into shape. Not sure if this works for both inch and metric. I read somewhere that metric tabs being turned in causes problems. Mountainman over on FAL files was working on getting some machined a couple of years ago but it never materialized. I have no idea where these can be sourced.

I'd love to hear if anyone has come up with a poor man's mandrel....i had thought about using some round stock roughly shaped to the radius on either side of the feed lips and hammering on that, but I think it would be difficult to get it right.

FN FAL Magazine Pull Tab DIY

Here is a how-to on making Paracord magazine pulls for the FAL, inspired by Tire_Iron over on FAL files who mentioned his method of using zip ties/paracord.

This method lets you make a pull loop that is held on by the base plate. Zip Ties add springiness. Strength seems pretty good, but I haven't tested it in field conditions.

I'd love to hear critiques and feedback on how this might be improved or done better.
