I noticed fn’s page has a picture of the Burris fast fire red dot mounted without a plate. It looks like there is a decent gap in front of the optic.

I don’t know why they went with this footprint, but from what EA has stated in a video, the optics plate could just be a spacer for the the optics. Fn’s website also has a picture of a dpp mounted but it is mounted with a plate. Has anyone tried mounting an rmr or anything else without using the plates?
