FNP9 Ammo

I recently picked up a black FNP9 which was on sale at cabelas which came with the free FN holster kit. Nice deal and great gun. I also have a Fiveseven.

This is the first 9mm that I own, and it was attractive because of the DA/SA style and the ammo is cheaper. On that note, I picked up some cheap Magtech ammo and went to the range to try it out. Prior to shooting it I cleaned and lubed up the slide with some militec1 and I was ready to go. The first time out I had a couple jams, FF's and FE's. At first I thought one of my mags had a problem, but then I tried some Winchester and Speer ammo and it cycled fine in the gun.

Seems like the FNP9 likes ammo a little hotter than the cheap magtech stuff. Has anyone had a similar experience with magtech? Any recommendations on cheap ammo for target shooting that the FNP9 likes? Any other brands to stay away from?

Some of the newer FNPs also need the recoil spring to be broken in.

Leave the slide locked back for about 2 weeks. Then go shoot it. It should work fine after that.
magtech stuff aint half bad.

I just use UMC yellow box for target, or winchester. Also will buy PMC target loads, but these tend to run more. Speer is also good, but harder to find locally.

UMC or regular Rem should be fine for target shooting, it's not the cleanest stuff in the world, but it goes bang, and is fairly priced. Bass pro is running 250 rounds for 68.99 right now on UMC..not a bad deal at all

for protection Golden Saber loads, and cor-bon all the way
The black FNP-9's don't like Magtech ammo.
Only the stainless two tones were designed to shoot Magtech.

:-D

Does Magtech make normal pressure ammo? I thought they only made +P ammo. That is all I have bought by Magtech since it was cheaper +P ammo compared to other +P ammo.

I shot some 147Gr Gold Dots without a problem, and it is not a hot load by any means, unless it takes more pressure to move the heavier bullet.

If you shot a box or two of +P ammo, it would probably break in the recoil spring.

ship - I figured it would probably take some time to break it in. Thanks for the tip on the recoil spring, it did seem pretty stout when I removed the barrel for cleaning.

shootstr - Sounds like a good deal on the UMC. Thanks for the ammo tips. I plan to reload my own once I get the #8 shell plate for my LNL-AP.

Thanks guys.
I've been using WMT Win White 9mm ammo (100 for $18+) since day-one... NEVER had one FTF, jam-up, etc... My FNP9 just eats 'em up...
For me, the $$ is right, shoots great, never had a problem, so why experiment?... Try the WWs see what you get.
I've never ran magtech through my FNP.

I generally shoot Winchester White Box for practice. A 100rnd value pack at Walmart is around $20. That's not too bad.

ETA: I've never had a single FTE/FTF with my FNP.
Out of 1000 rds thru FNP9M and 1500rds thru FNP9, not one bobble w/ mostly WWB & bunch of different +p JHPs.
Does anyone remember the not-too-distant past when 100 rounds of WWB 9mm was $11 instead of $19?
YEP!... And I also remember (not so long ago) when a gallon of Milk was $1.50, a dozen Eggs were $1.00 and a gallon of Gas was under $2.00... Yep, "The times they are a changin!"..

Times aren't changing, the value of the dollar is changing. I sure wish they would stop printing money to fund the war in Iraq. We cannot afford to borrow dollars from the Fed. I still don't think that gas prices would go down if we stopped printing money. The oil companies have always been crooked bastards.

I haven't shot WWB in awhile because I didn't like it. I was wondering why someone said it was around $20 a box. I thought it was a typo, remembering that it was about $10/box at the Wal-Mart. I'm afraid to go out and price self defense ammo; it used to be about $15/20 (sometimes 50) rounds for a decent hollowpoint. If WWB is nearing $20, then the rest of the ammo must be over $25 :(

I'm glad I have several boxes of Speer Lawman 115Gr to practice with.
Oil Baby, OIL!!....

YEP!... Right On... As long as we keep printing 'worthless money', the $USD will keep dropping and the Arabs will NOT be getting as much for each bbl of their Oil, so they just keep 'upping-it' to keep pace with that weak dollar! Always wonder just how much profit/bbl is enough?... Considering the average cost to pump a bbl of Oil is between $7-10/bbl... and in Spring 2003 when Oil was $25/bbl, producers were saying they could 'make a good profit' at that level... so, WOW, imagine how good it is at $120!!!... I gues its NEVER enough! ... "And The Beat Goes On!"

In the mid-west, that's what it costs.

Also, I just recieved something from Winchester stating that ALL their ammo will be going up in price in the next month.

I priced out 100 rds of WWB at 28 bucks here in an OKC walmart. That hasn't stopped me though. It's a tax write off for me (educational expense for armed guard training.)
