FNX 45 Tactical Mag Seating/Catching Issue

Hi,
I just took my brand new fnx 45 tactical to the range and fired 10 mags through it. After I drop the spent magazine and go to insert a new magazine it seems to hang up about 3/4 of the way in on something in the mag well, the best I can tell it looks like the spring for the hammer protrudes into the mag well and sometimes the rear lip of the mag will get stuck on it. If i drop the mag and try to re-seat it a few times it will eventually go in.

It does not happen 100% of the time, I was able to reproduce it with an empty mag about 20% of the time. Has anyone experienced this and/or have a solution?

Group 09 I noted the same thing as I have fnp 45 mags, they hit some resistance, but you can slam them in no problem

Fnx received my pistol, they told me they probably won't be able to look at it for at least 2 weeks. Leh sigh.

Driving the magazine into the magazine well normally = no issue.

Okay, after taking off the slide I figured out what i'm catching on and how to replicate it.

I'm catching on the mag release button/catch. If i tilt the bottom of the mag slightly back (away from the muzzle) causing the front lip of the mag to pivot forwards it causes the front lip of the mag to catch on the mag release. If i then tilt the bottom of the mag forwards (towards the muzzle) causing the front lip of the mag to pivot back it frees the lip and i can seat the mag. Is this common? I've never had this issue with any other hand gun I've fired.
I'm having the exact same issue with my brand new FNX 45 (non-tactical). Please keep us posted on what FN says is the issue.

Thanks!
Very interesting thread and thanks to everyone that is posting here. I have the exact same issue and did not notice until reading this thread as I normally apply forward pressure on the mag just as a habit I guess. Will be watching this thread anxiously to see what FNH says. Now, I have noticed something else and would like for someone to chime in on. I have been shooting a variety of Glocks for many years and just recently purchased the FNX 45 so this may be normal. Last night when I unloaded my magazines, I noticed that several rounds would hang up in the mag as I was pushing them out. The round would hang up about 3/4 of the way out of the mag. I would have to reseat the round to the rear of the mag several times to get it to dislodge properly. I tried all three mags with the same issue using speer gold dots, wwb, federal and magtech ammo, all with the same results. I thought, OK, this is not good, especially if a SD situation and what if the round would not chamber. I experiment with loading and unloading and when I would encounter this, I just pushed the round back to the rear, inserted the round in the magwell and chamber the round OK. The brass was scored some. I have shot around 500 rounds through the gun already with no FTF issues. I just thought this abnormal but being new to FNX, wanted to throw that out to see if anyone else has noticed this. By the way, that was the first time I have manually unloaded any of my mags which is why I have not noticed it until now. Thanks

I noticed on the FNH online tracking tool that they completed "minor repairs" as of this morning, I contacted FNH to get more info but did not get any, other than confirming that "Minor Repairs" were done to my gun. They will be shipping it back to me and hopefully I will have it by end of Next week.

I come from glocks, and I've always applied that slight rearward force in order to get the open slide to close into battery upon seating the magazine. As opposed to using the manual slide release button.

I spoke to FN on the phone today about the problem. They are having me send my gun back to them. I asked specifically what is wrong and this is what the guy told me.

Only a few of the FNX's are having this problem but the mag release bar needs filed down just slightly if this catching is happening. He said they it would only take a few file strokes and the mags will no longer hang up on the lip. He said it will be a quick turnaround.

I guess I could do it myself but will let them do it as they are paying for shipping and I know it will be covered under warranty.

My thought was that it could be fixed with a file, but likewise I said if they're paying for shipping I'll let them deal with it. Just to set expectations: They received my gun on the 18th, and today they told me i should have it back in my hands before the end of next week so you're looking at 2-3 weeks based on my exp.

I'll keep you all up to date when i receive it. I managed to snag a bunch of 45 today so I'm ready to take her to the range when she comes home.
I noticed this on my non-tact as well when I got it. I found where it was hitting then after reading this thread I'm gonna just file it down myself. It took way to long to get to see it just leave me after such a short time together :p
Perhaps you could document what you did and post it up for others that wish to try the fix themselves?

~This fix is for the hard stop magazines were hitting when slammed in or tilted forward in the magwell.~

You can click any pic to get a higher detailed pic if needed.

Alright first I started by stripping the gun down as normal. Here you can see the Mag Release and Magazine Catch Spring

The area in red is what is causing all the fuss. We need to do something about it!

Next I tried using one of my Dentist pics but it wasn't strong enough to pull out the spring. So I improvised and made a hook at the end of a paper clip
(which you can see in the following pic). You may need to press the hook of the spring on the bottom in with a small flat head screwdriver to allow it to slide out.

Here are only parts you have to mess with :) also the "FNH Magazine Catch Spring Removal Tool" (Patent Pending)

After triple checking the correct side I had to fix I used a paint pen to mark the correct corner.

Here is where I went the dumb route (but turned out fine!) I broke out the dremel and a countersunk grinding wheel

After taking the dremel and being extremely careful i shaved an angle cut into the corner i needed to. Here is the corner after grinding it down.

Another Angle.

You may need to test fit to make sure you took enough off. I was lucky and got it on the first go around. Also don't forget to put a little oil or take a bluing pen to the corner.
Now just put it all back together and enjoy not having to wait 2-3 weeks!!

Good luck!

Awesome! Thank you very much. Wish I would have done it myself rather than sent it in. Great job!
I had that same problem when I reloaded every now and then..it took me a couple times to figure I was canting the mag like you described and had it hang up. I have not had the issue with any other handgun either. I have learned to keep my reloads straight as possible (always a goof thing anyways right?) and it has ended the issue for me.
It was surprising how stout and how firmly it stopped the mag change. It wasn't just a bit of a hang up. For me it was like hitting a wall..it stopped dead in its tracks.
My FNX-45 Tactical has the same exact problem. Thanks for the write-up Al3sinth.
My FNX 45 is doing the same thing. Glad to find the fix and even happier to find this forum!
Got it back from FNH today, sent it on on 1/16 (i think) and received it today 2/4. The magazines seat perfectly now with no hang-up at all.

I just purchased my FNX.45 TODAY as well. Cleaned, lubed and went for some mag practice... WHAM! Stopped dead in its tracks, mine is hanging up on the actual MAG=RELEASE I believe, I need to have the base of the mag pushed toward the front of the gun so the top and RELEASE-EXTENSION of the mag can skim by the release, this is absolutely unacceptable! Also I have more than a few scratches on the barrel and on the top of the chamber by .45 ACP. These are all things FNH has to fix for me as a new gun right? I love the gun but bad start. (First post also, Hi everyone!)

Is that the improvement over the FNP line that FN mentions on their website? :p
