I picked up an almost unused FNX45T (FDE) from Cabella’s a couple months ago. For about $900, I had the gun, case, three mags, and a TLR1. What a deal. According to the associate, the guy that traded it in was a previous employee and he had a habit of buying guns, putting a few rounds through them, then trading them in if he didn’t like it. His loss, my gain.

I took it home, cleaned it up, and ran a few mags of mostly Sig 230 FMJ and JHPs through it. No issues whatsoever. I decided to slap my Sig Romeo1 on top, then ran another mag or two through it. Again, no issues.

Yesterday, I took it and a couple other guns to an indoor range. Through about 100 rounds, I had one light primer strike on a Sig 230gr JHP, and half a dozen FT-ejects. This was with some bulk Fiocchi 230gr (860fps) target ammo that I bought in bulk. My Sig P227 ate it like everything else. Needless to say, I was totally pissed.

So, I brought it home, cleaned it up, racked it a couple hundred times, and removed the red dot. I also decided to take off the Talon grips I had, and replaced them with some Hogue Handalls. I took it out in the backyard today and ran a few more mags through it. Completely flawless. This was with a few more rounds of the Sig JHP and the rest was the Fiocchi. The gun is exceptionally accurate and recoils very softly.

First, I don’t know if I’m in the clear yet. I probably won’t trust it until I put another couple hundred worry-free rounds through it. I did spend some time in the forum looking at issues others have had. Aside for the troubleshooting steps mentioned above, I also paid more attention to my grip. I doubt the red dot changed anything functionally, but I suspect it could have affected my grip and stance, even though it probably shouldn’t if I’m co-witnessing.

I did notice that my brass wasn’t going very far- most of it was within two feet of me. I suspect the Fiocchi may be at the very low end of the power this thing needs. I’m guessing a poor grip could easily cause it to malfunction. I also noticed that the gun dries up pretty fast. As a combat gun, I would think it should be able to run off of oil. Grease tends to attract dirt quicker and can quickly gum up a gun- combat conditions tend to be dirty/ dusty. Finally, I noticed that when slapping in a new mag, the slide will automatically slam forward- not sure if this is a feature or me slamming it in too hard.

Anyways, I’m going to look at some higher powered JHP for this when it makes it into my nightstand. I really like this platform, so I’m hoping it’s back on the up and up. I can forgive some issues early-on, so I’m hoping I’m in the clear and can regain my confidence with the gun.

Thats my rant. Any thoughts are welcomed.

1. Soft/limp grip can cause failure to feed or go into battery.
2. Low powered ammo can cause the same.
3. I've had the same issue of gun going into battery after slamming mag into it. Only happens occasionally for me and saves me a step, so I don't mind.
So, I'd say get some different types of quality ammo and see what it likes; run a few hundred rounds through it and see if that clears up any issues. Overall, I think it is a very good pistol.

Thanks. Yeah, I also like the pistol a great deal. I still have a bunch of the Fiocchi, so I’ll go through the rest of that first. I’ll probably look for a 230gr that’s over 900fps in the future. Considering that I’m new with this gun, the possibility that I was holding it improperly is real.

Dam, you don't read much of the FNX45T having fussy ammo issues. I've shot a lot of varied ammo both in standard configuration and supressed. My 45T has been flawless in all aspects. Maybe the Sig ammo was a bit soft velocity wise, and with the added weight of the dot optic is was causing some slide short stroking. I ran my 45T for about 4 months with a Burris FF3 and suppressed and did not have any issues and I was running my 230 gr handloads that chrono at about 825 fps. Hopefully just a one time deal with your FTFs

Update: I slapped my red dot back on and put another 150rds of the Fiocchi through it today- zero issues.

I did go back and follow some of the recommended break-in procedures throughout the week. I figured it certainly wouldn’t hurt. At this point, though, the only thing I can guess is that I was limp wristing it before. It’s such a fun gun to shoot. I’ll be putting it up on house duty now.

Question, did your FTF's seem to occur more with shooting where the mags were at full capacity ? I do know my new mag springs were VERY stiff when loading the last 4 rounds. Is it possible your new slide had difficulties stripping the first few rounds from stiff mag spring pressures ? My mags now that i've shot about 1K rounds seemed to have loosened up. (BTW Maglula speed loaders are your friend !! )

No, most of them happened a few rounds into the mag. This makes me think I probably had a good grip on it, but loosened up after a couple shots.

Most likely: it just needs to be broke it. Happens to both my FiveSeven and FNX 45T. Within the first 500 rounds, both feeding and ejection failures are somehow expected. This should be the result of new recoil springs. Give it some time, and it will rock.

At 2500 rounds with my FNX 45T now, there is zeros malfunction in a looooong time. Except for automatic slide release with fresh mag inserted.

I consider this a "feature" as it makes reloads faster under stress.

I had a HK USP 40 that did this. The manual said: "Forcefully inserting a loaded magazine into the USP Pistol may cause the pistols slide to close, chambering a cartridge and making the USP ready to fire."

On the other hand, my SA XD sub-compact manual says: "Do not slam or forcefully jam magazine into magazine well." Of course, I had to slam a mag in to see if the slide would close and it does not. Might be something for combat/LE oriented pistols. Or maybe not.

I had major issues with my 45T when I shot it last year. FTF, FTE, light primer strikes(only a couple of these), you name it. Erratic ejection too. Sometimes pooping out at 3 O'clock, sometimes pooping straight up and hitting me in the head.

This was the first 250 rounds through the gun in the same day meant to be the break-in. All 3 mags exhibited the same behavior, and when my friend tried he got failures too.

I believe there were 2 factors, thinking back on it.

1. I did clean the gun new out-of-the box, but I forgot to then lube it! Geez, my bad for sure.
2. The ammo I used was Omega 230gr HP. Never heard of anyone here using it, but the website talked a good talk about ultimate quality and reliability, etc. Whatever....... my gun didn't like it one bit.

Have not shot it since then, but I'm confident those 2 things were the complete source of my woes that day. I'm still going to go through with the .460 Rowland conversion, and I'm pretty confident my initial issues will disappear.

I do have another issue of shooting slightly low and left, but that's probably due to my short sausage fingers. I need to practice more (read: more than zero). No blisters though, not even close hehe.

I got my FNX-45T new and had some Russian ammo when I first shot it. Several failure on the first two magazine so I switched to some the Federal Aluminum case stuff. A few more failures. I was about to quit but decided I should shot some more. Shot the rest of the 50 round box without a single failure. (I shot the rest of the Russian ammo in a Browning BDA (SIG 220) with no issues. I've not had a single issue since then. I've since added a Viridian X5L G and the Romeo 1. The trigger has gotten better. Oh, and I'm new to the forum, this is my first post. I'm also interested to hear about the 460 Rowland conversion.

You are Limp wristing it. Common occurrence on 1911. I ran 400 rounds (first time shooting it) yesterday with my young son. As soon as he fired it it had a failure to feed as the cased fired didn't quite make it out. I had him continue to shoot it as I filmed his hands while he was firing. What a great training tool by the way. Anyway once I showed him the video and helped him with his grip (very large frame for his small hands) he no longer had any issues. What a great pistol! Great job FN!

I believe this pistol is tuned for some full power +P 45ACP. It cycled 230 gr Winchester stuff but struggled with my 167 PF reloads. Retro fitting it with a Glock recoil setup fixes that. I’ll bet this baby eats up 45 super better than the HK USP with the factory spring.
