Highland Heights City Council unanimously voted to repeal an ordinance that prohibits carrying loaded guns within city limits at its meeting Tuesday night with no discussion or comments from the public in attendance.

The repealed legislation, which was more than 50 years old, conflicted with state laws that were changed in 2006 to allow concealed carry and again in 2011 to allow permit holders to carry in bars and other places where alcohol is served. Ohio law prevents local government from enforcing superseding restrictions.

"This law is no longer effective and it's important for us to reconcile our books with the state law," Council President Cathy Murphy said. "This is not a statement, philosophy or politics, it's just a legal formality so we can reconcile our code with the state law."
