How do you change a sliding stock on a Car-15? Is there a way to put, say a Mag-Pul stock on the recoil spring/stock tube without removing the tube, castle nut, etc.? Any help would be appreciated.

You don't have to remove the buffer tube, castle nut, etc., when replacing the stock body on a carbine collapsible buttstock.

To remove the original stock body pull down on the stock locking lever and hold it down while sliding it off to the rear all the way until it slides off the tube.

If you're installing a Magpul CTR stock, there is a pin that sticks out in the middle of the stock body on both left and right side and you push down this pin both left and right side while sliding it on the buffer tube.

There is an installation instruction and operation procedure sheet included with the Magpul stocks.

Keep in mind that there are two sizes of tubes used on M4s.:

Note: There are two types of buffer tubes (receiver extensions) in common use: Mil-Spec and Commercial. If you have a Commercial buffer tube on your rifle, make sure you order the Commercial CTR, stock number MAG311.

These are the buffer tube types that are supplied from the factory out of the popular AR manufacturers :

Mil-spec buffer tubes (receiver extension):

Colt Defense
LMT
Noveske
S&W
CMMG
Stag Arms
Armalite

Commercial buffer tubes:

Sabre Defence
Bushmaster
RRA
Olympic Arms
DPMS

How to determine if you have a Mil-spec or commercial buffer tube type if your brand is not listed, the Mil-spec type are smaller outer diameter of 1.146" while the commercial model are larger diameter of 1.170".

Thanks for the answers! I thought it would probably be an easy solution, but wasn't positive. Say a person had a Sig 556 and wanted a different stock instead of the "fish-gill" sliding stock, does it change the same; and what is the size of the buffer tube? Will it take a standard Mag-Pul CTR stock?

ON a SIg556, U might have to stick with a Sig compatible stock. Not sure. I know some people have put folding stocks on the Sig556s, but I don't know which stock they are using.
