Hello all FNX 45 Owners,
After the long journey of holster after holster and holster issue after holster issue, out of the kindness of my heart, I am taking the time to provide a simple step by step holster solution for all new owners so they will not have to waste their time and money like I did. In the beginning I read on forums online that inside the waistband (IWB) was the only way to concealed carry this gun. I knew I was going to put a trijicon 07 RMR on it and to my surprise there was not a single outside the waistband leather holster option on the market that would fit the RMR. So I ordered a kydex IWB holster, the best on the market with the comfortable padded backing for $150. That is when the problems began. The sharp angles on the FNX45 kept catching the weapon and locking it into the holster preventing any ability to draw even with all my strength (I would have to undo my pants to get it out of the holster!). The anterior (front) ejection port lining of the FNX45 is not rounded like my 1911 but rather straight line come to together to form a point (look at the picture I attached below and you will see what I mean). This point on my gun catches any kydex mold that has an ejection port indent. The IWB carry option means that the kydex will always be pressed against the gun by the sandwiching action of my side/ass and the belt/pants on either side of the holster leading to the kydex catching and random lock up no matter how loose you set the retention screws. I took the holster apart and realized that the ejection port point was even ripping strips of plastic right off the inside of the kydex mold. No way am I going to risk my gun locking into my holster during a self defense situation and no way am I going to unbutton and pull my pants down in public to get my gun out when I need it. So I bought another IWB holster but had them fully flatten the port indent on the mold. This helped some but the port and other sharp angles of the gun still were scratching into the plastic and I could not draw as rapidly as I wanted and the grip strength of the holster on the gun changed base on how I was sitting or standing and I want draw speed consistancy. The other problem with the IWB holsters was that with this big weapon and the holster I felt like I was wearing a gigantic diaper! I mean, extremely uncomfortable is not the word to describe how an FNX45 in an IWB holster feels. I personally found it almost unbearable and very silly feeling, like I was wearing a diaper is the only way I can describe it. I am in shape, 5/10, 175 lbs. Maybe a 6'8" 250lb giant would not have this diaper feeling, I don't know. So anyways, then out of the blue one day I came up with the solution and it only cost me less than $75 bucks total! So now without further ado I present it to you all: my final holster solution step by step guide!!! :
Step 1: Go to your local recycling bin and throw that sh*tty Chinese kydex plastic crap into the recycling bin (or ebay it)
Step 2: Go to retailmenot or other discount code website and get a discount code for "Optics Planet" website. Right now you can skip this step bc Optics Planet gives you a 10% off code on their homepage banner!
Step 3: Go to "Optics Planet" and order the DeSantis FNX45 Tactical Thumb Break Scabbard (it is an outside the waistband holster). I bought the black leather option, lined, and suede interior. With code I paid $55 bucks! If you order the exact same thing from Desantis its $80-$90 bucks!! This is currently the only Desantis holster for the FNX45 Tac and it will not fit with a RMR - I called and confirmed this myself. But don't worry. We will modify it to fit very easily in only 10 minutes!
Step 4: When the holster arrives put the gun with RMR attached on top of the holster and a with a marker mark where you will cut the thumb break flap off to fit the RMR (see pic below of mine). Put the gun inside without the RMR attached and check your markings. Take a box cutter or other tool and cut along your markings (I used a wire cutter).
Step 5: Take the holster to a local cobbler (dude who repairs shoes) or any dude or shop that is versed in working with dead animal skin. I paid $15 bucks to have the cut edges finished and stitching fixed (Not really happy with job he did on mine - he did a lazy quick fix, but whatever it was $15 bucks, I could have done it myself but I thought he could do it better...).
Step 6: Pick up your holster. Loosen the retention screw all the way. Put your gun in a thick sock and work it into the holster by twisting it back and forth. Tighten the retention screw all the way. Leave for 2-5 days.
Step7: Take the sock off, insert weapon, adjust the retention screw, and BEHOLD THE FINAL PRODUCT (see below)!!!
You will notice how the gun rides very high (feature of DeSantis) and it easy to conceal with a windbreaker or other small springtime jacket or sweatshirt.
Notice how the gun fits perfectly into the holster with a tight grip. Turn it upside down with the gun inside and shake it and notice it does not come out!
Notice how the draw is fast, smooth, and reliable.
Notice how its made of high quality thick leather and not sh*tty Chinese plastic! The perfect partner for your beautiful expensive FNX45 w/RMR setup!!!
Note any leather will slightly rub on the slide finish over time, but if you keep the inside free of dirt you can minimize this. Besides its a self defense weapon not an artwork to hang on your wall!
