Injured city man allegedly tried to hijack backhoe

Staff report
The Tribune-Star

TERRE HAUTE — A Terre Haute man remained in a local hospital Wednesday with leg injuries from a gunshot, and preliminary charges are pending against him for allegedly trying to hijack a backhoe.

According to Detective Darren Long of the Terre Haute Police Department, Christopher David Deckard, 42, will be taken to the Vigo County jail after his release from the hospital on allegations of carjacking, a class-B felony, criminal mischief and battery.

Long said Deckard will have surgery and should be in jail within two to three days.

Deckard also had a warrant for his arrest from City Court, Long said.

According to Long, Mark Tarrh, 48, was operating a backhoe at a business at 2006 S. Third St. when Deckard walked up to the machine and climbed in through the back window, placing him in a headlock.

After a struggle, Tarrh managed to escape the backhoe and get to his truck where he called 911 and retrieved a handgun.

Deckard allegedly operated the backhoe for a short period of time before breaking the gears, got out, began to walk away and then approached Tarrh in “an aggressive manner.”

Tarrh then reportedly shot Deckard in the leg, Long said, noting the incident took place about 3 p.m. Tuesday.

“Alcohol may have been the reason this occurred,” Long said, noting that the investigation is ongoing and toxicology tests have not yet been received.

There once was a man from Idaho,
That decided to steal a backhoe.
Copping a plea
as he was shot in the Knee.
Said he really just wanted a Ho-Ho.
