Hi all, new to your forum. Seems like a great place to ask my questions.

I've been looking for a replacement for my aging 40 caliber handgun for a while. Been doing a whole lot of online research these past weeks. Part of the reason for the online research is that, in this part of the world, gun shops are few and far between.

A good friend has a really impressive 9mm 1911 that I'm very impressed with. And for a while I was heading in that direction; but I kept seeing all these reviews about the FNX series that kept getting my attention.

So here I am, leaning towards the FNX-40 now. I've read all the positive reviews, seen all the great videos. I just want to go with the 40 because I have "quite a bit" of 40 ammo left...

Two questions. First: is the 40 really only 24 ounces "heavy"?? My current pistol (whose brand I won't mention) is close to 40 ounces. And that weight has always been a bit of a problem with my smallish hands.

Second, for those who own it, and once again because of my smallish hands: what's the width of the grip?

Thanks all!

Yes it is light compared to the full steel frame competition but I would say it's much lighter than a lot of the other polymer pistols out there. It's weight is good for carry. As far as the grip is concerned it comes with different back straps to accommodate those with smaller or larger hands. I don't hear many complaints about the grip size around here.

Full disclosure - I had one for a year and a half and a I sold it. I try to stay away from selling my guns. The only two reasons for me to sell is the extreme need for cash (they are literally the last things to go) and if I just can't seem to get proficient with it. The 2nd reason may same like a piss poor excuse but there are certain pistols I just can't seem to shoot well and the FNX-40 was one of them. That being said that is a fault of mine and not the pistols. I know this because a friend of mine was in the market for his first pistol and I let him shoot all of mine. Out of all of them he shot the FNX-40 the best. So I sold it to him and used the cash to pick up an XDM 40. He was easily and consistently hitting a 50% steel silhouette plate at 50 yards with it. The reason I bring this up (I say this to anyone in regard to any handgun) is that if it's possible I would suggest you shoot it before you buy it.

:welcomesigntb3: to the Forum, as Kam mentioned if at all possible shoot it before you buy it.
Thanks for all the replies so far, and the warm welcomes!

I wish I could do the "try before you buy" thing; but that's one thing that rarely works in this part of TX. The closest decent size city with more than one gun store is a 5 hour round trip :-(

I'll have a look at the two "local" (is. 2 hours apart) stores; but I don't recall ever seeing anything FN made there. Hopefully I just wasn't paying enough attention.

In the meantime, if anyone else has any comments or advice, please let me know.

Thanks!

If you ever find yourself in DFW (Not sure if you travel around Texas at all to see relatives or whatnot) - I'm sure one of us locals would be willing to have you meet them out on a range trip and let you take some shots.

I love my FNX. My other half isn't cool with me spending much money on guns and when I went to get my last piece I ended up spending around 1600 with the agreement that I'd sell my FN.. It still isn't sold - I wonder if she'll fall for that again?

I travel quite a bit for work and medical trips for/with my better half; but rarely that far. Last time I was up there has been 2 or 3 years by now. It's an 800 mile round trip! But thanks for your offer; you never know...

As for your other half, well... Only time will tell. But I'll cross my fingers for you

would not recommend the FNX 45 for someone with small hands. Perhaps a compact model would be more pragmatic OP.
Well... I said "small-ish", not "small". Compared to my housekeeper my hands are HUGE! But she's very short. And I've seen plenty of guys with bigger hands than myself; maybe I'm just not giving myself enough credit. I'm 6'1"; but I've seen quite a few guys with hands bigger than mine. Or maybe theirs are just freakishly large

Anyway, looking at the FNX-45 I see that its weight is pretty close to what I'm using now. And I was really looking for something lighter (among other things); so I think I'll stick with the 40.

Thanks!

So I happened to be in one of the "nearby" cities today, out to do a job. It was supposed to be an all-day job; but 30 minutes after walking into the facility it became clear that not all equipment was onsite. And the job was rescheduled.

That left me with a whole day to do other things in town, including checking out that brand new Academy store that was built there earlier this year. And yes: they had the FNX-40! A split second after getting it in my hand I was able to answer my own question: yes, it really is that light!

Gotta be back there next week, after that fancy company gets their act together and reschedules the job; and I'll have one with my name on it before I leave town.
