Here is my review on the new Kinetic Development Group SCAR MREX Rail (4.9" MLOK version). It can be read in its entirety on my blog for any who are interested:

Airsoft Tech Talk: Kinetic Development Group SCAR MREX Rail Review

Yes, it is an Airsoft related blog. The review focuses on mounting it to a real FN SCAR 16S though, so no need to panic ;)

And some SCAR porn with the rail installed for those who just want to see some pretty pictures!

Thanks for the review. It seems like a pretty solid system. Some advice though - you may want to re post that on a gun forum because the Airsoft thing is going to steer a lot of people away from a good article.

I agree with http://fnforum.net/forums/member.php?u=19217KameronTKelly but make it two separate articles. One airsoft oriented and one for the real SCAR then just have a link for the other article. Anyway good job on the article. I didn't like the step down part of the rail but since you mentioned why they did it, it makes sense. Also would you have to mod the rail or can you mod the airsoft gun instead? I would imagine it would be better to modify the VFC scar than the more expensive quality rail.

As I'm an Airsoft repair technician by trade, the blog is entirely oriented towards that venue and my target audience who are primarily Airsofters. But I do occasionally review real firearm components because many of us install such items on our Airsoft guns too so they match our real firearms. I just thought I would share the review with the folks on FN Forum who were interested in the rail as it is a really well designed setup.

Regarding modifications: the VFC SCAR is the more expensive component in this setup - it's a top-of-the-line gun (the crap found at Big 5 or Wal-Mart can hardly be considered Airsoft lol). so it is vastly easier and cheaper to modify the rail than the SCAR. In this case, the part that needs modification is a u-shaped bracket that's bolted to the KDG rail. It may be possible to obtain a replacement bracket from KDG for those who would want to return the rail to stock form so it could be re-sold or mounted to a real SCAR. I would have to investigate this.

Mr X, do me a massive favor and measure from the front of your new rail to the barrel shoulder behind the muzzle threads? I have a suppressor that comes back over the barrel and I need to know how much room I would have with the shorter forend.

Thanks for the review and pics!

Thanks for the review. I'm always interested in weight saving measure on my long guns. I would like to know more about the availability and compatibility of mlok accessories.

I know we all like to talk sh1t about the "war sim" crowd, but I'm a real believer of saying "imitation is the sincerest form of flattery". And in lot of cases, airsoft serves as the ONLY option for firearm enthusiasts in more restricted countries.

The more I see and read the more I'm considering this option for my 17. This rail looks fantastic.

Without removing the flash suppressor, it appears to be 3 3/8" (inch) from the front of the handguard to the barrel shoulder. This is of course using the standard 16" SCAR 16S barrel length. The longer 6.5" rail would obviously provide even less room for your style of suppressor.

On a slightly related note: I don't think either variant of handguard would work well with the 10" SCAR barrel assembly unless you were trying to accomplish that recessed Noveske KX3 look popular on AR's.

Magpul is fully behind the MLOK accessories market right now, and at last check, there were nearly as many MLOK accessories as there are for KeyMod now. Further on down the line, I believe it will open up to more and more manufacturers too. I could potentially forsee MLOK overshadowing KeyMod, especially if the price point per accessory and even the entry point price on the base systems becomes cheaper. Kind of similar to the old BluRay vs. HD-DVD deal.

I realize it's popular to bash on the "warsim" or Airsoft crowd. But most guys fail to realize the sheer level of money this crowd dumps into the firearms world - in some ways they do far more to support soft-gear and hard-gear manufacturers than actual gun owners do themselves. I was in the retail side of firearms for a long time, and I saw first hand (and still do) how much this group will spend to get the gear. Most of them are full time gun owners too. A good majority are former or current LEO/MIL guys as well. Lots of Veterans use it as a form of PTSD relief or to continue to experience a bit of the camaraderie they had in their former occupations. In other words, don't knock it till you try it.

Plus it's just plain fun :D

I work in LE and we typically use sim pistols and Airsoft in our training. It saves my agency money and makes it more realistic... Also one of the best tools for teaching people how to utilize cover.

Ah! I see. I do airsoft too and have a VFC SCAR SBR (CQB version to airsofters) since I can't have a real SBR (I live in California  ). I have seen quite a few second hand VFC scars that are pretty beat up, not working, or older gen sell for pretty cheap compared to the rail which is why I suggested that. However, it's good to know that all it would possibly take is a small, cheaper part to be modified.

I have found playing airsoft is invaluable and cheaper to get a feel for what gear and accessories works for me and for practice. I also recommend it to all my gun buddies.

I see a lot of beat up VFC's too. I don't know how someone beats a gun up that bad except through carelessness. I just fixed up a VFC SCAR H for a fellow here who reportedly got it for $11. It required close to $250 in parts and labor to get it functional again though lol.

I received my 4.9" KDR MREX w/ MLOK from Midwest Outfitters yesterday. I intended to wait until my new muzzle device was in to install both at once, but you can imagine how long that idea lasted... Oh well, it was about time I did a thorough cleaning of the gas system.

I already had a first generation Midwest Industries extended rail system installed. That rail worked well with a bipod, and did protect the barrel so I did not have contact with the barrel when shooting from a pack or other positions, but it was way too fat with all the rail. I have small hands I guess. It just didn't feel right, and I wanted my SCAR 17 to be a little more nimble than a dedicated DMR type setup. So I ordered the MREX.

I watched the MREX installation video. I had the proper tools. Removal of the MI rail and factory side rails went well. Installation of the MREX was easy. I actually had more issue with the MLOK rails, but hold that thought. The 4.9" MREX was about 1.1" shorter than the MI, but it doesn't seem even that much shorter. I shoot with a forward grip and it is plenty long. The rifle is MUCH more nimble / responsive with the MREX rail and I can get a good forward grip. The MREX has two uncaptured screws on each side, but I don't swap barrels frequently.

I like to run a stubby vertical grip for a couple reasons, so I set about to install the MLOK rail sections included. I should have watched a video first... I planned to install the short section underneath the front sight for the vertical grip, and the longer section at the end, both at 6 o'clock, to attach a bipod. The vertical grip was just about the same place as the sling swivel socket, so it did not work out. Further, the MLOK screw put upward pressure on the bottom of the barrel gas block. DO NOT PUT ONE UNDER THE GAS BLOCK OR YOUR RIFLE WILL NOT LONGER BE FREE FLOATED! I can live without the vertical grip and it is now located on my SBR.

Will have to get to the range soon to confirm zero and do some drills. So far, I really, really like this rail. It makes the rifle what I wanted it to be. Another poster said it made the rifle feel lighter. It does just that.

I wish the MREX was about $200, but it was just what I was looking for from the beginning.
