I have hundreds of brass cases. Can't reload them without primers!
Get on an email notification list. Brownells, natchezzs, and powder valley have been getting pretty frequent drops. They sell out quick but they have been nearly daily drops.I also reload the 5.7X28 (Ruger 57), mostly because of the short supply and very high cost of factory ammo. However, primers are almost as hard to find. Even though Houston is a huge area, I get laughed at when I try to find them locally. Online, either you need a minimum of $200 or the business is a scam (that is, ALL companies who only accept Zelle, Venmo, etc.) Beware of these, since once you send the money, there is no recourse on recovery of your payment if the order is not sent. For some reason, the scam artists seem to be particularly active in "offering" 5.7 ammo and its components.
Does anyone know of a reliable online source? I will soon be running out of small pistol, small pistol match, small pistol magnum and small pistol magnum match!
Thanks, Natchez was one of the few suppliers I had forgotten about. Went over there just now and snagged 1000ct. Federal Small pistol magnum match! I am pretty much on every other notification list in existence!!!Get on an email notification list. Brownells, natchezzs, and powder valley have been getting pretty frequent drops. Sometimes they don’t send out emails as well. Shootingbot sometimes grabs the drops and can email them. Thanks, Natchez was one of the few suppliers I had forgotten about. Yeah, but seems all of Fiocci's offerings are a bit light in the loafers compared to FN's version. Hope they improve this.Great news everyone. Not sure about the discontinuation but Fiocchi is now producing an ss197sr twin! It's called the
Fiocchi Hyperformance 5.7x28mm Ammo FN 40 Grain Polymer Tip
Fiocchi is the only large manufacturer that's loaded the 40gr offerings in the past, both AE FMJ and SS197SR. There are several smaller companies that have offered the 5.7 loading at their full capability, the problem has always been the sourcing of brass as FNH was the only company making it and most of the time the smaller companies had to pull bullets from loaded ammo to get their brass (the exception was the short time Elite was making their own brass). When the brass issue is sorted out hopefully we'll see more ammo and maybe even some actual performance stuff too.Yeah, but seems all of Fiocci's offerings are a bit light in the loafers compared to FN's version. Someone with mass production capability and economy of scale needs to step up to the plate and do better service to the potential of the caliber. Underwood, are you listening???
I would be surprised if they stop, because there are new guns coming on line almost every day. Having said all that, I like my reloads better. So is fiocchi stopping 5.7 production, or is midway just going to stop carrying 5.7? I have several 5.7 guns which I enjoy immensely, I'll be sad if they stop.
Food for thought.... I am starting to play with the 62 gr green tips...SS198 and hand loads with any of the frangible bullets are quite different in capability. They both have their advantages and disadvantages, but they are not really interchangable if you are looking for a similar end result. The 28gr bullet in the 195 and 198 tumbles when it hits where the frangible bullets break into many small pieces as they shed their energy after impact. There is not really a good commercial bullet substitute in the 28gr range for the 195/198 bullet that I have found. I use the 45gr controlled chaos solid bullet for similar performance to the 195/198, just a bit slower because of the much higher weight. It used to be pretty easy to find the 28gr bullets for sale as folks were pulling them down and reloading with a different bullet, but have not seen that for quite a few years at this point.
Scheels had some the last time I was there.I also reload the 5.7X28 (Ruger 57), mostly because of the short supply and very high cost of factory ammo. However, primers are almost as hard to find. I have found their varnish coating to be of a different makeup and thinner. My Son's FiveSeven has trouble feeding it. When I re-use the brass and run it through my die setup, he doesn't have any problems. The shoulder seems to be in just a tiny bit different position...Fiocchi is the only large manufacturer that's loaded the 40gr offerings in the past, both AE FMJ and SS197SR. They are too long to stabilize in the 5.7 1:9 short barrels.Food for thought.... I am starting to play with the 62 gr green tips...
