There are people who carry on this conversation anytime the topic comes up. On The Firing Line and Glocktalk - it is the SAME guys who don't even own one or have any experience with the gun that continue these stupid 22 analogys. They will always do it.

happens all the time on ar15.com also.

funny thing is, that's the exact same thing that detractors of the ar15 said earlier in its history as well.

just kinda goes to show you, i guess.

Well, I suppose the 5.7X28 truly IS an overpowered .22. Just like a .223 is an overpowered .22. Think about it. .22-->.223 DUH!

Morons.
Some people's kids. You can buy em books and send em to school and what will they do? They'll eat the erasers! 8)

everyone has a right to there opinion, but sometimes opinions should be kept to oneselves, especially if one has no expierence with what they are talking about!

it comes down to what people feel comfortable with, i personally do not feel outgunned with a Five seveN or the 5.7x28mm round. If there was one magic weapon that killed people with one shot (James Bond's Golden Gun :-D ) then thats what we all would be using.

Hasn't the 5.7X28 been tested next to a 9mm HP and found to have better results?
Yes.

The 5.7 x 28 even in the ss195 and ss197 are amazing rounds. I tested the 195 against a level 2 vest..... went right on through.

Very good rounds!!!!!

Research and References?

Yet another new poster at TFL is ragging on the 5.7x28mm round.

"Overpriced plinker"

"Does nothing a 22 Mag revolver can't"

"blah, blah, blah..."

I love my Five-seveN and my PS-90 -- but I'm no ballistic know-it-all. Does anyone have research or reports that describe the difference between a .22 Mag or the .223 and the 5.7?

I don't feel like it's just a semi-auto .22 Mag -- but I'm not sure how to back those feelings up. Any info you can point me to?

IIRC the FN Five-seveN provides .22 Magnum *rifle* ballistics out of a pistol length bbl while using a superior bullet and out of the PS90 it's roughly equivelent to the .223 at 300yds. HTH...

Stopping power of the .223 and 5.7x28

I have owned ar-15s for twenty years and I have stopped a 3/4 ton elk bull in his tracks with one well placed shot from a AR-15 he never even took one step. Just droped there and then. When I dressed him out I found that my .223 round had tumbled thru the chest wall and riped his heart out, then stopped in pieces in the other side of his chest cavity. Not bad for a little .22 round
As for the 5.7x28 I have just paid for my PS-90 and have not had a chance to shoot it yet, but I hear it is a devastating round, so let the morons flap there gums unless they have walked the walk they should shut there traps...David..

The 5.7 is a 22 magnum magnum. Not that there is anythign wrong with that. I love my 22wmr savage bolt gun - 1" groups at 100 yards all day with a crappy $20 scope, and clay pigeons at 200 yards all day as well. But, a box of 50 rounds costs me $10 instead of $20-30...

A buddy has a PS90, and while it is fun to shoot, it is not what I want in a gun. Then I've gotten funny in my "old" age... no more 9mms, I have a 1911 now. No more AR15, I have a FAL now. Heck, the only 22lr rifle I have is for my daughter - my rimfire is the savage 22wmr...

Personally I'm waiting for more guns in the 5.7 caliber. I think something like my Savage 93 in 5.7 would just be sweet. Or a pistol barrel for a TC Encore. Or even a full size bolt gun.

I keep hearing some compare a 22Mag to the 5.7 and I tell them that thats like comparing a 30 Cal (M1 carbine ) to a 30-30 Win.

30 cal

110Gr bullet----2000fps------880FT Lbs

30-30 Win

110Gr Bullet-----2684fps------1760Ft lbs

No comparision.

The ballistic wars will never end....fortunately I don't care what the ballistics are, my PS90 ALWAYS goes to the range with me because it's my favorite gun, hands down. I shoot at an indoor range and they let me shoot my handguns, PS90 and shotgun all on the same lane. There's nothing like firing 50 rounds of ammo without having to stop and reload. Do I use it for home defense? No, but I may start keeping one next to my bed at night "just in case". If a couple of handguns and the PS90 won't save my skin then nothing will.

I have personally developed 45gr reloads that travel 1960 fps and generate 384 ft/lbs (Now that is more energy than most 9mms, on par with 9mm +Ps (124gr Golden Saber +P = 383ft/lbs), almost equal to a 45 Auto ([email protected]=391ft/lbs). For those of you that say "well thats with reloads" anyone can purchase 5.7x28 S4s from EA that generate 350ft/lbs. Those statistics dont even account for the effects of tumbling and hydrostatic shock.

So dont tell me the FsN is a .22 mag handgun.

BTW the guys over at snipercentral (including mods and admin) have issues with the 5.7x28. Bring it up, and be prepared for a flurry of ignorant remarks and childish put-downs.

I was reading a thread over on another forum where a guy posted up ft/lb numbers similar to yours using the same analogy, someone responded stating that "energy numbers are completely meaningless" and that reaching the FBI's minimum penetration depth was all that mattered.

He went on to try to make some sort of goofy analogy that a car moving at walking speed generated 5x the ft/lb of the Fiveseven and asked if anyone would trust a car moving at that speed to stop an attacker.
