I'm considering buying Nightforce Scope in either 3.5-15 or 5.5-22 for my 17... Any suggestions or pitfalls? Pictures of your NF mounted? I've scanned a few threads but I just figured I would ask?

I have the Nightforce compact 2.5-10x32 on my 17s and it is a great scope, I really like it. The only minor complaint I can say about it is it adds substantial weight(its 19 ounces) plus another 8 ounces for the ADM delta mount. The 27 ounces added does not effect the balance but it is noticeable. The night force you are looking at is over 30 ounces without a mount so as long as your aware of that and ok with it I say go for it because nightforce makes GREAT scopes and offers a lot of really good reticle choices. I would suggest glancing at the swarovski z5 or z6 lines(if weight is a consideration) but it is hard to beat nightforce.

I'm aware of the weight, I think the 5.5 might hang past the end of the rail, which is making me lean toward the 3.5. Either is a little overkill for the shooting I usually do, but I have two 17's so this one would be somewhat dedicated... I also have been looking at getting a Desert Tech Covert and it would probably see use on both.

5.5-22 is A LOT of scope for the 17. Being that it's a battle rifle and not a bolt gun I would look more at the 2.5-10x42. Maybe the 3.5-15 if you plan on doing most of your shooting from a bench. I have the 1.5-6x Elcan Spectredr on mine now and can hit man size targets out to 500 without a problem. Haven't tried to take it any further but I'm sure it could as long as I do my part. Can't go wrong with a Nightforce either way though.

I know it's more than needed for a 17, but I would likely use it on a Desert Tech down the road and I'd rather spend once... Thanks for the suggestion on the Leupold, I'll check it out.
It's not more than needed for the 17. These rifles are capable of sub moa accuracy out past 700 yards so if you want to do some real target shooting at long ranges I think your scope choice is great, you need the higher magnification for precision shooting. Hitting a man sized target at 600 with a 1-6x scope isn't precision shooting, it's hitting a giant target without having the optics to pick out a spot on the target you want to group shots into. Best of luck with your choice.

Not really. You might get lucky on a string of shots, but a 17s isn't going to reliably hit 6" targets past 700 yards. My vote is with the "3.5-15x is overkill on a 17s battle rifle" camp.

If you're going to move it later, the 3.5-15 might work. I used that optic with hits at 1100 yards in my long range class, and it worked well.

I have the NF 3.5-15x50 on my bolt gun and it's a great scope. However for the Scar I would look at the NF 2.5-10x42 instead, this will probably be my next scope on my 17. Having shot my Scar 17 out to 650 yards using the Trijicon 3-9x40 scope, 10X mag will not hold back the Scar from shooting very well at distance IMO but I know some people like more mag than others.

Either way I would probably skip the NF 5.5-22x50 for this one. The eye box is much less forgiving on the 5.5-22 vs the 3.5-15. I found it much more fatiguing to spend any real time behind the 5.5-22 when compared with the easy and clear sight picture of the 3.5-15.

I know you state NF but with the magnification you seek, think of the 3-18x44 Mark 6. And if you want to see that one on a SCAR 17 .... http://fnforum.net/forums/album.php?albumid=225

Good luck in making your rifle just the way you want it!

You could go with a Bushnell Elite 3.5-21, 1-6, or 1-8.5, they are made in the same factory as Nightforce.
Although I have a NF NXS 3.5-15X50 on my SCAR 17 I would not hesitate to put the above Bushnell on a 17S. I have 3 of them. 1 on a MR762, 1 on a MR556 and 1 on a POF P-308. Excellent scope for the money and $500 less than the NXS 3.5-15X50 Nightforce.

The SCAR is not the preferred platform for long range because of its 16" barrel, but everyone has their own interests. OF course, NF is excellent, so is Leupold. There are probably some even better scopes for long range.

I went with a NF 2.5-10 on one SCAR 17 and an Aimpoint T-2 (should arrive any time) on the other. If I wanted to do long range it would be with a different rifle.

I'd say it is too much scope, but GO FOR IT and let us know how it works out. I'd be really interested.
