Yay, my HK SL8-1 arrived at my FFL today. I bought it from a police officer in Illinois, great guy. He shipped it with a TNP AR-15 magazine well adapter, which I plan to install. I think this is the rifle that will end up here in Hawaii with me.

Up next: M17s, FS2000, PS90TR. Then MAYBE a USP/Mk23.

When they all arrive, party at my place!

Nice work - that's a rifle that doesn't get nearly the amount of attention it really deserves. Very sweet.

I have looked at them many times myself. I kinda want one - but my days of $1000+ weapons are done. I've had a $1200 1911 that I had issues with (I've told the long drawn out story before, I don't feel like getting into it). And now I've sunk a ton of dough in my PS90. I'm satisfied with the 1 rifle.

And, $600 is my max on new handguns now. I've had my fill of expensive stuff in the past...

Yeah, I admit it's a bit hard shelling out all the money for these, but I figure I'll either get them now or get them later; might as well be now. Especially before the election. And I really don't foresee wanting much else afterwards (besides a Barrett and Desert Eagle).

Nah, not yet, but I plan to. I need your guys' honest opinion though: if I have the sock dyed, should I do it in black or dark green? Black looks really good to me, but it's kinda conventional. Green would look a little more unique, especially with the black accents.

I'm a fan of black myself.

You going to go full out and do a clone G36?

Don't forget that whole 922R legal thing. I think that's the only thing keeping me from modding mine. Well that and the whole having to cut up the stock thing.

Nah, I like it the way it is, especially with that long sight rail.

Does 922(r) come into effect with the AR-15 mag well, or is it just the G36 magazine well? I thought it was just the latter

It comes into effect with either one. If I've read things correctly, as soon as you change anything on the gun, it becomes custom, thus you have to now replace enough parts for it to be considered American.

Also, realize that to make the gun use the AR-15 mags and to feed from double stack magazines you must also cut away the depression just below the bolt on the right side of the stock AND you have to get a new bolt. The original bolt is cut to where it won't feed from double stack mags.

Wow! Where was that done?

(r) It shall be unlawful for any person to assemble from imported parts any semiautomatic rifle or any shotgun which is identical to any rifle or shotgun prohibited from importation under section 925(d)(3) of this chapter as not being particularly suitable for or readily adaptable to sporting purposes except that this subsection shall not apply to—....

People must use the "10 US parts" rule when doing an SL8 - G36 conversion, because the G36 is banned from importation. The G36 magazine well is a step toward the G36 conversion, thus requiring the rule.
The AR-15 magazine well isn't a step toward the banned G36, but a step toward an AR-15 (as silly as that sounds :?: ), thus not requiring the 10 US parts rule.

That tiger stripe pattern looks really good! I think I like it better than black or green.

That's incorrect. The BATF knows you're not converting your HK SL8 into an AR15 as that's impossible and the AR15Magwell is not a real AR15's magwell, but the name of a conversion that let's you use a US made AR15 magazine.

Also once you insert said US made AR15 magazine you immediately violate the 922r parts count unless you have swapped enough US parts into your HK.

I think with an SL8 you will need to swap trigger groups, magwell, mags/followers, possibly the stock. Not sure though.

Same went for my HK USC to UMP conversion. I had to switch to a US made trigger group, use US mags, US stock, US lower magwell for it to be legal.

The Tigerstripe was a local job done here in CT. Loosk great on a rifle with lots of plastic showing. :?

The UMP is also banned from importation. My curiosity is going now; I think if I ever get some free time I'll see if I can contact a represetative from the BATFE and ask.

What kind of business is it in CT? Do they paint or dye it? I'd be really interested to find out. Do you know if they have a website I can check out?
