So first off, a little about me. I make my living in the tech world but I also teach shooting courses for a nationally renowned shooting instructor when he travels through WA state. Two weekends ago, we taught a “patrol rifle” class. I normally shoot an AR15 with a short barrel and a permanently mounted suppressor (predates SBRs in WA) or a Steyr Aug A3. Its usually a “carry a lot, shoot a little” type of thing, so I thought I would try something lighter (we usually demo the drills but typically only shoot 3-500 rounds over the course). I opted to use my newly SBR’d Ps90 and have some pretty interesting learnings that I thought I might share. My PS90 is set up the following way:

  1. Barrel cut by TROS USA
  2. Aimpoint Patrol in TROS mount.
  3. Urban Sentry P90 sling (run as two point).
  4. Bullpup armory 9 slot w/qd attachment rail on the right side of the weapon
  5. FN brass catcher
  6. 10 FN factory 50 round magazines.
  7. SWR Spectre Suppressor.

Hardware:

The work done by TROS was first rate. Quick turn-around time and good communication. The Aimpoint Patrol fits nicely in the mount — higher than I would like but doable. The Urban sling works well, once you get the thing installed. I’d prefer the rear mounting buckle to be further back on the stock, to keep it sucked into the body but it appears to be the best option going. The Bullpup armory rail is a head scratcher… the rail seems to require the socket to be mounted on the end facing the barrel. This makes mounting a light pretty hard, so I used an extra piece of mounting hardware to mount the sling swivel on the back of the rail. A Streamlight HD pistol light was mounted to the front of the rail. The FN brass catcher is super cool. Small but still holds plenty of rounds and isn’t a pain like a brass catcher on an AR. IT does prevent access to the action if there was a stoppage, so I won’t mount it for “duty” but for training it is a great way to save brass. FN mags worked as expected. The SWR Spectre is excellent. I lost my disassembly tool and they sent me one in 2 days for free. Can’t speak highly enough about them.

The Software:
First off, damn this thing is short. We run a hot range and I have carried rifles (ranging from 27 inch Steyr Augs to 48 inch long FALs) for long periods of time. Never had any issues. This thing is so short that muzzle awareness is a constant concern. Sitting down, standing over students who are shooting prone… requires much more attention. Having said that, it is really worth it. I did eventually add the suppressor to it, which makes it a bit longer. While lots of people were jocked up in all sorts of kit, I was carrying a Glock 43, an extra mag, a blade, a P90 mag in my back pocket, and the mag in the gun. Nice and light and easy to live with.
I zeroed the P90 like an AR with a 40-240 zero. It was dead ass on (using FN 40 grain ammo) at 40 meters and about 4 inches low at point blank range. Hits out to 120 meters on 2/3 steel silhouette targets were easy. Control pairs and double taps on the same target at 40 yards were also easy. One of my fellow instructors pointed out that my “oh crap” non standard response to a sudden target at close range with an AR tends to be 2 to 3 rounds. With a P90 it is 5 to 8 rounds in the same amount of time. It is very easy to shoot well and very fast. Given the power of the round, more is definitely better.

The muzzle flash suppressed was non existent in pitch dark, and without the can was there but it was less than a handgun round for sure. POI with the can mounted was about 3 inches different - unsurpressed it shot to the left. Elevation was fine. I’ll do some work and measure that in more detail next trip. The trigger was very Glock like and easy to work with. If I can find an additional trigger pack I may tweak it, but mine is an early pack and I don’t want to play with it.
I found a couple of interesting things about the P90 that really opened my eye. I am right handed but left eyed, as my right eye isnt’ really good for much.

  1. The iron sights are actually really well regulated. I was able to get hits at 40 yards with no problem using them during the “dead battery” drill.
  2. Shooting prone doesn’t offer a lot of stability as there is no mag to monopod off of. You get cover or sure, but the benefit of shooting prone from an accuracy perspective is minimal. The round doesn’t kick up dust like a 5.56 when shooting prone, so that is something.
  3. This gun really works well for a lefty. While I don’t like the amount of sight offset, it does mean that I can shoot the gun from my right shoulder with my left eye. That is very hard to do with most platforms.
Reliability was perfect, even after several hundred suppressed rounds. The gun was gunked up but continued to run with no issues.

I’ll be getting some good ammo in the next couple of days (from R and R Weapon Systems). If they are reliable and do what they claim to do, I think this SBR will be a constant companion on my travels. Light, small, quiet, reliable, accurate and lethal. I’ll do some gel testing on that and report back.
I think there are a couple of things that a talented machinest (not me) could do improve the platform. Someone should be able to make an optic mount with a bottom dog leg (cantilever) that goes forward over the muzzle to mount a laser or light. It could also be done by mounting a base that fits in the square indent above the magazine and below the sight that then positions a light over the muzzle. Either would improve the laser/light options.

So as a veteran shooter that is new to this platform, I’m impressed so far. I don’t look at this to replace a 5.56. I don’t even look at it as a replacement for an m1 Carbine, but if I can get ammunition to perform on par with 9mm JHPs, but with more range and more penetrative ability, all in a recoiless, light, short, hi cap platform, than I’m in.

Hi There,

Thanks for the question, but I want to respect the forum rules and not have this drift from learnings about living with an SBRd p90 to something that could be interpreted as a promotional thread. PM me if interested.
