Businessman Greg Vecchi shows where the boundaries of a gun and multi-use Deadwood Range will fall on the first floor of the Gallows building in Deadwood, S.D.

DEADWOOD, S.D. — A businessman in the western South Dakota gambling town of Deadwood wants to combine an indoor shooting range with a saloon.

The Deadwood Guns complex proposed by Greg Vecchi would have several businesses, including a gun shop, a pawn shop, a shooting range and a bar called the Bullets and Beer Saloon. A ballroom would host a gun show four times a year, the Black Hills Pioneer reported (Bullets and beer - Black Hills Pioneer: Local News ).

The City Commission has approved the business to allow alcohol sales and indoor shooting, but no more than 50 percent of its income can be derived from alcohol. Still, Mayor Chuck Turbiville had some reservations.
“I mean, ‘Bullets and Beer,’” Turbiville said. “The association between the two . how will you control people who may or may not be drinking?”

Vecchi, an Army veteran who is retiring from the FBI next month, said the saloon area will be locked down, and people will be tested for alcohol consumption with a Breathalyzer before being allowed to shoot.
“Sequence is important,” he said. “Bullets first, beer second.”

Shooters also will be supervised by an employee or by Vecchi, who plans to join the Deadwood Police Department as a part-time officer.

“I’m not going to put any of my licenses on the line,” Vecchi said. “I’m not going to risk my reputation or my licenses. We have to run a tight ship here.”

Vecchi hopes to have Deadwood Guns operating in June.

“I want this to be a place where mom, dad and the kids can have fun,” he said. “A place where the whole family can enjoy the shooting sports.”

maybe its just me but does anyone else feel like this is an accident waiting to happen?
You think he came up with the idea for 'Fast and Furious" and passed it 'along"?

Kidding aside, in Texas I use to go to a 5 stand place and Quail Unlimited had a barrel of beer on ice as a fund raiser. No shoot outs there. Of course it was my understanding in Texas you are pretty free to do what you want on unincorporated land except for messing with water ways.

I like the concept for that community I am also guessing it is a small town (1,270 2010 census) so this may work for the community but It would take one drunk to kill the business. Where I live the concept would be laughed right out of city hall which is sad because my state has the most lenient laws re alcohol. I guess this business may coin a new term designated shooter while his buddies get drunk at the bar.
