Hi all im new to the forum and new to the Scar 17. I recently purchased a Scar 17(black) and want to set it up for hog hunting. I need help with optics and ammo choices. I just received a super scar trigger and extra mags in the mail and will have the trigger installed next week. Any advice, help, and or comments on upgrades and tips will be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I'm new to all these new optics available, plenty to choose from. I like a 1 x 6 variable. But for myself, I think I'm just old school, I love shooting with irons. Usually I'm hiking and using my 17 for personal defense from woods creatures. If I really need the mighty 17, I figure it's gonna be really close at something running really fast. For hunting, optics are better for good shot placement though. I saw the hog hunting with a 17 and had to visit the post. I think the 17 will excel in hog hunting. I've no personal stories of charging hogs, but I know others do...so keep alert, shoot straight, and enjoy the great outdoors !

What distance will you be killing your bacon from? Are you hunting after dark? Any night vision requirements? Are you using the optic for anything other than hunting? What kind of budget are you thinking about? There are endless options so you need to narrow it down but if your just looking to buy a top of the line optic that will serve your needs in any situation including sniffing out bacon I would suggest making a call to Ken at Kerif Night Vision:

http://www.nitevis.com/ELCAN_SpecterDR_DFOV156.htm

The optic gives you a quick choice of 1.5x for your closer cooking of the bacon as well as 6x in case the pig happens to pull the slip on you. The glass quality/clarity is unbelievable and the reticle is dummy proof once zero'd at 100 meters!

But, if your looking to save a few bucks on glass to have more money for ammo to slice up your bacon a ton of guys are running Vortex glass and loving it! Hit the search function on the forum for SCAR17 optics-it will help:). Good luck!

Thanks for the replies i looked up the Elcan, its a real good looking scope but i dont want to spend that much on a sight. I was thinking a $1000 max because I wanted to get a suppressor also. I did do some looking threw the site for optics but still need to do more research. Most of the hunting will be done after dark and less than 100 yards, so a 1-4 or 1.5 - 6 will be enough magnification just worried about illumination.
