I am very pro S&B and ever since the SCAR17s hit the civilian market I thought the perfected 1-8Short Dot was going to be the ticket optic.

Unfortunately,it’s been all but vaporware. People knocked the Mark 8, but it’s an actual product you can buy. The best idea doesn't mean ****if it never leaves the prototype phase.

1-8 Short Dot demo
models had very nice glass as you would expect from S&B, but it had the same problem as the 1-4...the eye relief changes rather dramatically as the power is advanced as the dot is not in the second focal plane. Believe S&B is correcting that issue for the 1-8 Short Dot which is one of the actual reasons for the scopes 2+ year delay/ price increases.

Depending on what the price point will be if it ever hits the US market I don't think it offers that much of an advantage over the current scopes already out there.
I think if you already have a quality 1x6 or 1x4 you aren't losing much to this scope. While everyone’s requirements are different and having the 8X reach is nice, it is probably not necessary. Probably 98% of our shots are within 500 yards and easily manageable with 4x or 6x, real men even do it with irons. FOV can be just as important as magnification for what we do.

I have Kahles 1-6x right now with the SM1 retical in a 30mm bobro mount. So far it seems to be working out. With all the preparation to PCS to a new duty assingment next month I have yet to get the chance to run it through the ringer past 200+ yards. Once I do I'll be sure to post my results. :)

Real (typically young) men who can see that is.

Old men with aging eyes like me have only two choices:

1) More magnification

2) Spray and pray

THAT is why there is a waiting market for 1-8x.

Personally I'm hoping for a selection of 1.5-12x's or a 2-16x's to come to be built on the fairly recent 1-8x magnification multiplier.

I hope I never get that old!
