EDIT: Turns out this has already been heavily discussed on the forum (20s 7.62x51 new twist rate). This thread can be closed!

I just ordered a brand new Scar 20S in 7.62x51 with FDE finish. I paid top dollar for a brand new unit and would like to confirm it's the latest generation if any differences exist beyond part numbers.

I have not received it yet but noticed the invoice lists the part number as 38996. Some searching on Google shows this is the part number for a 20S with UPC 845737006761.

FNamerica.com lists the current part number for the 20S 7.62x51 FDE as 38-100545 with UPC 845737011178.

Do any differences exist between these models?

Thanks in advance!

After digging a bunch I found a partial answer. Looks like the model I purchased has been discontinued. I can't figure out when. Some stores list both models and many of the big stores (Cabelas, Sportsman's Warehouse) only list the discontinued 38996 model.

Changes I found (there may be more):
38996 ---> 38-100545
1:12" twist barrel ---> 1:10" twist barrel
3 prong flash hider ---> Surefire ProComp 762 muzzle brake
11.2 lbs ---> 11.6 lbs

The changes seem minor but I am torn over whether to go through the hassle returning my purchase and sourcing the current model. It seems FN must have made the barrel changes for a reason. I'd have no problem buying the discontinued 38996 if it were discounted but I'm having a hard time accepting a discontinued model when paying full price.

Can anyone offer any advice?

Appreciate the reply but I do not think this is correct. Everything I can find shows both UPCs being FDE finishes.
