I just received a 17 for my birthday and now I am looking for a scope. Can anyone direct me and give me your opinion on a scope. Here is what I am looking for.

1) that its FDE
2) that it will allow me to see out to at least 600 yards. (I'm in my 50s and can't see as well as I used to.)
3) One that doesn't cost a million but something that is worth the bucks.

I have a 16 with an ACOG.

The FDE is going to limit you quite a bit so you might want to either think about getting a black one and spraying it or get it professionaly coated. There a bunch of optics threads on this board. They end up in the OP going with his gut and getting what he wanted most from the start. If you're like me and your vision isn't what it used to be you will want plenty of magnification for 600 yards. If your wallet is light look into vortex scopes. They have plenty to offer ranging from cheap to very expensive. Leupold also has a ton of options also in a variation of pricing. How much magnification do you think you want or need for 600 yards?

Personally I went with a MK6 3-18 from leupold with an illuminated reticle. It is the best piece of glass I have ever had the pleasure of using.

$3K will pretty much bag you whatever scope you want. I would take a hard look at that MK6. Look at the Vortex Razor HD too. Some people here like US Optics and SWFA. My vote (obviously biased) goes to the MK6

The Leupold VX-6 4-24x52mm w/ illuminated FireDot Boone & Crockett or Varmint reticles and popup-zero exposed CDS turrets looks interesting for 1/2 the price of the Mark 6 3-18x44mm.

Thats a big ass scope haha it must weigh as much as the rifle but atleast you have a nice billy club if you run out of ammo
It is close in size and weight to the Mark 6 3-18x44mm.

Mark 6 3-18x44m: 23.6 oz. 11.9" OAL
VX 6 4-24x52mm: 23.7 oz. 14.3" OAL

I run the Mark 6 1-6x20mm 17 oz. 10.3"OAL on my SCAR.

Thank you for the enlightening post!

The mark 6 and vx6 scopes are not even comparable. Completely different scopes. Even leupold will tell you this.
Just being over 2 inches shorter is a huge difference as far as scopes are concerned. Just my .02
Very true, the Mark 6 series feature attributes geared to combat while the VX 6 is designed for hunting; however, either could no doubt fulfill the others role if needed. How does going from 11.9" to 14.3" (2.4") represent a "huge difference" when the weight is relatively the same?

If I had $3,000 to buy a scope I'd save up a little bit more and get a Schmidt & Bender Police Marksman II 5-25 X 50. They have them available in black as well as FDE for $4,000.00. But, I have seen dealers offer them on sale at 10% off. One of those sales would knock that price down to $3,600.00. They also have S&B scopes in lower powers and fixed powers at $3,000 and lower. You might check them out. S&B as well as Swarovski make outstanding scopes. If I was looking into long range sniper scopes I would definitely get one of theirs.
