I would appreciate it if some folks would share with me their data on the muzzle velocity of Federal Gold Medal Match 168 grain out of their SCAR 17.

I'll reciprocate once I have had a chance to lug my chrono to the range.

Thanks in advance!

Hi Jeff. Glad to share.

I ran 10 rounds, of Federal Gold Medal Match 168 grain BTHP, through the chronograph today and was very impressed with the the consistency of the ammo; but a little disappointed in the speed.

Firearm: FN SCAR 17S
Conditions: Cloudy; Wind - Calm; Temp - 83F; Humidity - 92%; Baro Pressure - 29.99; Altitude - 589 feet

2486
2478
2466
2481
2469
2472
2488
2473
2481
2474

Avg: 2,477 feet per second. According to my calculations, the bullet goes subsonic at 950 yards.

I am fond of this cartridge, but I would like a little more speed. I'm may consider going to a lighter round, with a high BC, that stays supersonic out past 1000 yards. If anyone has such a load that they would recommend, I'd like to hear about it.

The big range was closed due to a competition, but now that I have the scope dialed in, and have a reasonable base from which to develop my DOPE, I can't wait to try it out to 300, 400, 500, and 700 yards!

That's a tough one. I am running 155 A-Max at 2600 and that round goes transonic at 900y. I believe the "Palma" bullets were designed for M1A and 1,000 yard matches but you are likely missing sufficient barrel length to run the MV up. My 155 likely represents the bottom end of a good LR round and sadly because of the twist, the 17s won't stabilize 178g BTHP rounds. With the 168g you are likely extracting all that can be had from the platform, sans a caliber conversion or barrel options.

FWIW, my 18" OBR throws the 178's at 2460 and that round goes transonic just before 1,100y. Only throwing this out there to give you an idea what just another 2" will yield with a heavier bullet.

I can't believe companies aren't making barrels for these yet.

Thanks for the input.

Barrel options would be GREAT!
