So I have had this Rem Fast Knife for a few years and it was cheap so I couldn't pass it up. I have HATED the grips on it and I've been looking at some nice custom knives lately and decided maybe I'd make some nicer grip panels.

So this is what came with the cheap knife, nice set of cheap grips.
Nice and flat with a thin, no nothing appeal.

I picked up a 10"x2"x3/8" slab of OD Green canvas micarta and roughed out some panels.

After some grinding and filing they started to shape out.

And after some fine filing and hand sanding, my hands were shot.

A much improved feel and now I have more in the grips than I do in the blade. $13.95 for the blade and $17.99 for the micarta.
I don't think they came out to bad for a first attempt.

I like micarta, it has a nice feel and lasts forever.
I agree, it took some time to decide what I wanted to use but after looking around it seemed the best especially for this project. I'll even probably take better care of this knife now.
Next thing I'm thinking of doing to it is Cerakoting the blade.

Do we have a potential sponsor in the works .... ?
I would say it came out extremely nice for your 1st attempt. " Benchmade " watch out ! ! !

I can remember way back.....Uh... Oh.... time for another story from the " Kave ".... !
I was a young journeyman toolmaker, just finished my apprenticeship, was working over in the Delaware Water Gap area... and was filled with piss & vinegar. Worked alot & partied alot, taking risks were a non calculated thing... since I was usually working off the latest nights binge. Any-who... one of my budd maintenence guys had a 2 ft plus machete. he had the grip off and needed it sharpened... I told Big Bill ... yea I'll do it... I think it was a bamboo chopper he brought back from Ho Chi Minh trail... anyways I said ,we would throw it up on this big wet grinder and flat grind the pitts out. I come walking it the toolroom with this big knife blade and everyone is staring at me... ( Probably saying what is he up to now ! ) And a few more things that I wont mention for story brevity ... Anyways I kept flipping it and adjusting the neutrifier magnet to get it flat and some how got ot smuggled out before getting caught by the " teamleader "...

Thats about the extent of my knife making.... I did get fired for threatening to adjust the pressroom foremans keister a few months later.... oop's another lump on the head going down the road to the school of hard knocks.
