The Game Changed in Venezuela Last Night – and the International Media Is Asleep At the Switch

Dear International Editor:
Listen and understand. The game changed in Venezuela last night. What had been a slow-motion unravelling that had stretched out over many years went kinetic all of a sudden.
What we have this morning is no longer the Venezuela story you thought you understood.
Throughout last night, panicked people told their stories of
shooting at people and makes an urgent plea for an investigation into widespread reports of torture of detainees. There are now dozens of serious human right abuses: National Guardsmen http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AsgmY9bVr8g&feature=youtu.be&ac"]shooting tear gas canisters directly into residential buildings. We have videos of a city of 645,000 inhabitants has been taken off the internet amid mounting repression, and this blog itself has been the object of a Facebook “block” campaign.
What we saw were not “street clashes”, what we saw is a state-hatched offensive to suppress and terrorize its opponents.
Here at Caracas Chronicles we’re doing what it can to document the crisis, but there’s only so much one tiny, zero-budget blog can do.
After the major crackdown on the streets of large (and small) Venezuelan cities last night, I expected some kind of response in the major international news outlets this morning. I understand that with an even bigger and more photogenic freakout ongoing in an even more strategically important country, we weren’t going to be front-page-above-the-fold, but I’m staggered this morning to wake up, scan the press and find…
As of 11 a.m. this morning, the New York Times World Section has…nothing.

Funny how crap like this happens, and then you have cops gunning down protesters in Ukraine and the military doing the same in Egypt, yet liberals think that anyone who believes the 2A is needed to defend against tyranny is crazy/paranoid. Oh, let's not forget that little thing in Syria also.

Occupy wallstreet itself was a case of fairly heavy-handedness from the cops according to their own, and our president is constantly attacking the 2nd, 4th, 5th, and 6th amendments.

Venezuelan Beauty Queen Shot in Head During Protests

A 22-year-old Venezuelan beauty queen was fatally shot in the head during violent anti-government protests that have claimed six victims in a week. Genesis Carmona, a college student and model, was shot when gunmen on motorbikes fired on protesters. Valencia and was immediately rushed to the hospital. The sixth death occurred during a demonstration fueled by protest leader Leopoldo Lopez who was thrown in jail and accused by President Nicolas Maduro of stirring up the violent clashes. The Venezuelan beauty queen’s Twitter feeds showed that she was an avid supporter of the opposition.

Genesis Carmona, 22, who was Miss Turismo 2013 for the state of Carabobo, was taken by motorcycle to hospital where she died on Wednesday. An unnamed relative of the Venezuelan beauty queen shot in the head during protests expressed anger while asking how long the pressure and killing are going to last.

“She only needed one more semester to graduate,” the source said.

Carmona, who had been studying tourism at university, is the sixth victim claimed in a week of violence brought upon by Lopez, a 42-year-old Harvard-educated economist who started protests against President Maduro’s government. During a nationally televised speech on Wednesday, Maduro alerted the population that the fascist groups cannot be underestimated even though their “boss is behind bars.” At the same time, the president acknowledged the death of the Venezuelan beauty queen and expressed his deepest condolences to the family of the college student who was shot in the head during protests, regretting that “this young lady with the world at her feet was a victim of violence.”

Although he is still in prison, Lopez urges people to keep fighting in order to determine the president’s socialist administration to step down. The leader of the opposition led his followers to protest for a protected freedom of speech, better security and an end to nationwide shortages. The Venezuelan beauty queen was one of the ardent protesters and her Twitter account proves that she often retweeted messages of the opposition’s influential members and urged people to join the protests.

“Stay with the one who tells the best stories,” Carmona said. “One day they will be yours.”

After three people had been shot dead in Caracas, one person was run over by a car in Carupano, a woman died after the ambulance taking her to the hospital was blocked by opposition protesters in the country’s capital and Venezuelan beauty queen Genesis Carmona was shot in the head during protests in Valencia, two other conflicts could soon smolder.
Amnesty International criticized the Venezuelan government of fabricating evidence to silence Lopez and the organization’s Americas Program Deputy Director Guadalupe Marengo stated that the charges “appear to be politically motivated,” and that “evidence to substantiate” them has not been found.

While six people have already been killed, including a Venezuelan beauty queen, Maduro stated that the United States is behind some of the protests and three American diplomats were given 48 hours to leave the country, because they are accused of conspiring to incite anti-government feelings with the protesters. President Obama responded to Maduro’s accusations and urged him to focus on the “legitimate grievances of the Venezuelan government” rather than “making up false allegations.”
A Venezuelan beauty queen was fatally shot in the head during protests on Tuesday, but more victims could come as the opposition follows Lopez’s spurs to violence against the government.
