Those that fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it. As potential of WWII started heating up, the Germans convinced Britain and France to talk to the Government of Czechoslovakia and convince the Czech's to give them northern Czechoslovakia (called the Suddaten Land) because a lot of Germans lived there and they needed to be reunited to Germany (it did not matter that most of the Germans that lived there had moved there to get a way from Hitler). The Germans said that this would insure peace in Europe and the world. The British and French succeeded and northern Czechoslovakia became part of Germany. A few months later Germany said they needed the rest of Czechoslovakia and took it without a fight. The Germans needed that area to invade Poland and thus WW II began.

Do you think the Russians just want part of the Ukraine? Putin's intends to rebuild the old Soviet Union. Who do you think is playing the part of the British and French in todays version of history?

one final point - appeasement never works with bullies.

Georgia says 2008 war encouraged Russia to take Crimea

The failure of the international community to punish Russia for its 2008 invasion of Georgia has let Moscow think it can get away with seizing Ukraine's Crimea region, Georgian President Giorgi Margvelashvili said Tuesday.

"The fact that the 2008 scenario used by Russia in Georgia -- when a sovereign state's territories were seized with military force -- is now being employed again in 2014 against another country proves that in the last six years both we and our partners have failed to stand up to Russia," Margvelashvili told AFP in an interview.

Tensions between Tbilisi and its Soviet-era master Moscow over the breakaway Georgian region of South Ossetia exploded into a brutal five-day war that saw Russian troops sweep into Georgia.

Yes, agree! Where is this going to end if "someone" is not willing to stand up to the bully boy? I fear the consequences of either position though. It's a particularly nasty scenario that appears to have very few ways of escape.
