Personally, I always use snap caps to dry fire and cycle my firearms.
Most times you probably won't need them because you would rarely dry fire except to check functioning after cleaning and reassembly, but just like the others said above for practicing cycling and multiple dry firings, snap caps will spare undue area wear on the firing pin in its place in the bolt.
Just a a tidbit of advice from my own personal experience: use Tipton or Pachmyr caps. The all aluminum A-Zoom ones suck
