I saw that the fps of the 197 round is around 1,700 fps out of the 5.7 USG pistol, and I was wondering what the effective range is for this round for it to actually stop a threat? Is there some chart that shows "ability to mushroom at various fps"?

*updated 5/19/08 to add that the information was for the pistol

Orion, I often see this question being asked and for the life of me I don't understand why. I say that because at what range can you consistantly hit a target with your pistol? 50yards, 75yards 100yards? The effective range in my opinion has more to do with being able to hit the target consistantly at a certian range than it does with what the round will do at that range at terminal impact.

A 78 y/o lady shot her 64 y/o son-in-law with a .22LR at 250yards, hit him in the heart and killed him deader the hell. (lucky shot)

With all the gunshots I've seen, its where they were hit, not what they were hit with that made it fatal.

Just my .02 cents.

Using ss197 i can consistently place all of my rounds on a b-27 target at 50yds, next time i go to the range i will try to shoot at 100yds, the pistol is very accurate and has adjustable sights so it is capable of long shots, but i agree with devildoc's post you need to worry about hitting the target first

Thanks for the input, so far. However, the main reason for this post is to question at what distance the 197 no longer mushrooms, or becomes effective at giving a badguy a "bad day"?

Wow. . . . . a ressurected thread from 2008!

I have no issues with "effective range" anymore. I understand the mechanisms in place. Even if you followed the manual's notion of "55 yards", for a handgun, that's about as far as I'd want to shoot it anyway. Further than that, I'll want a rifle.

kusosama, I know of no longer range gel tests. Maybe someone else has that info.

Thank you Orion! :) I was hoping someone had that info since that really is what matters.

The fact you can put a hole through paper or ding a gong doesn't mean it'd enter a person through thick clothing and do anything significant for a wound channel.

Sometimes Zombie threads can spark up intrigue to get the info available. Maybe...

I have killed coyotes at 100 yards with ss197 40 gr. and shoot one half inch groups of 20 at 50 yards. I have my own range of up to 600 yards and shoot 3 or four times a week. If I could reload the 5.7, I could shoot it more often. I probably have put between 4 and 5 thousands rounds through the 5.7 and it still shoots great and I've never had a malfunction. I shoot 2" groups at 600 yards with my Remington 220 Swift with a Kahles scope.
One day at the range I wanted to see how far the 5.7 would hit a 12" target. Using ss197 40 gr. I hit a 12" frying pan 9 of 20 at 200 yards freestyle with both eyes open. I have pictures of the 5.7 targets and as soon as I figure out how to post, I'll do so.

Twenty shots in a half inch at 50 yards with a 5.7x28.

Yep, I'd have to see that in person.
