Trying to find advice for my wife. She wants to get her ccw, her father and I were excited seeing as we'd all be taking the class together. I live in Illinois so it's a 16 hr class and I only have to take 8 (veterans get a break). My issue is now my wife is telling me the only reason she wants to take the class is to feel more comfortable with guns around in public places that she can't see. I believe this is the wrong reason to take the ccw class, any help is appreciated. Thank you all in advance.

It will introduce her to gun safety, and awareness.

Not sure how the class is in your state, but I would guess they will talk about protecting yourself, as well as firing weapons.

She might get hooked on the hands on part. :?

She's good shot already. Just her reasoning I believe is wrong. To feel more comfy with others carrying firearms, it actually bugged her when in another state (prior to Illinois getting CCW) and I pointed out several people who were printing slightly that I'm sure we're legally carrying (in a gun store purchasing gun related items). I don't feel that spending $175 on a CCW Class is going to help that.

Thank you. I've taught her a lot of gun safety and handling (I spent 4 yrs in the USMC), the way she said it prompted me to tell her to take the nra basic pistol course, I believe she'd get more out of it than listening to the legalese of where you can and can't carry in illinois. More can't than can, but that's a different subject.

I feel that's kind of the wrong reason to take the course as well. Ask her why she thinks it might make her more comfortable with others carrying. I don't really see how taking a CCW class would do that.

Djv38; I can't get a definite reason from her, I told her we need to go to the range more often where she can see good law abiding people practicing their skills safely and to take an NRA pistol class as well. One of our local ranges have a women's shooting league that I am encouraging her to check out as well.

C_Ush78, I think you have the right idea. It's better to sit down and get a handle on why she is uncomfortable with other people carrying. Taking a CCW class won't make her feel comfortable around others carrying, unless she is going to go around asking who has/hasn't taken a carry class.

Anything positive to do with guns I would encourage her to do. The more exposer to normal people talking and acting In a constructive way should have a good affect on her sooner or later. I would not argue with her about it or discourage her in any way, and now you know what I think!

Agree w Mooosie. Any positive steps are in the right direction. How long is the class good for before you have to get the CCW? The legalese might also settle her mind or make her aware in a dangerous situation where somene shouldn't be carrying. That being said, good luck!

I have a friend who teaches H.I.T.S. Courses in your general area. He has scheduled a course soon. If you are interested, I will look up the info. Henk Iverson training is a top notch learning experience. I am waiting for a course that is close enough for me to enroll.

Why not get her the permit even if it's for a reason you don't think is valid? It gets one more law-abiding citizen on the "books" as supporting the 2nd and shows Illinois and other places that CCW are wanted and needed....Then SHE can carry if the need/want ever arises. It also makes it so she doesn't accidentally have possession of a weapon in a manner that might get her into trouble....IE you leave a weapon in the car/truck under the seat and she gets pulled over.. etc...

My wife originally didn't think she would never have use for a CCW but I put her thru the course and now she carries honestly about 40-50% of the time...

Ohh case in point..... Once when I was out shopping with my wife before she had the permit to CC we came across something she wanted me to try on and it ended up being a pain as I wouldnt/couldnt leave my weapon with her in her coat or purse since she would have ended up breaking the law.....

I completely agree. Everyone in my family has a CCW permit even the ones that don't like guns and never plan on shooting one. The reason I forced everyone to get a CCW permit was so if someone in the family drives my car or transport a bag of mine with a gun they won't go to jail. Even if your wife wants nothing to do with guns or is "anti-gun" it's still a good idea for her to get one. Think about it. What if you have a handgun concealed in your car and your wife uses your car. Or your in her car and for some reason you need to put you gun under the seat and run in a store real quick. While she is waiting a cop pulls up. Or maybe one day she gets some crazy stalker or someone who wants to do her harm and she NOW wants a gun to protect herself with. She doesn't need to go through the government BS and time to get a CCW. She simply carries.

I go into dressing room with my CCW. Not like I can't. You should too.

That's what I normally do but this was not a place that a private dressing room was available to use... It was out in the open and the place does not allow open carry...

Sorry for the lack of updates, not only did she take the class she knew more about weapons and safe handling of weapon than most of the people in our class. Her uncle was so impressed he told her to pick out any gun she wanted and he'd buy it. She picked the SIG p938 over the fns9c. He bought the gun and delivered it with a pink bow. She also out shot almost everyone in the class as well. I'm a damn proud husband.

Just tell her that she looks totally hot when she carries a gun - and it's a total turn-on. She'll be carrying 100% of the time before you know it.
